I was talking with a friend a few weeks ago, and of course the subject came around to guns, specifically rifles.
He mentioned he had a Savage 11 with a heavy barrel in .223 that he had no use for, he had bought it for his wife and she didn't care for the weight. I said that a bolt .223 is a nice fun plinker, he said he had a Ruger American for that. He went on to say that he had put ARs together for the family (himself, wife, son, daughter) and wanted some red dot sights for them. I mentioned I had 3 that I wasn't using, or likely to use. They were nothing special.
So I trade the optics I don't want for the rifle he doesn't want.
I take it home and look it over. It has suffered no apparent abuse and very little use, appearance was like new. Bore scope showed me some carbon in the typically rough factory barrel and it comes out easy enough. I torque the guard screws to the recommended torque, the AccuTrigger was breaking at 2.1 lbs., so I leave it alone.
I put a Leupold VX-2 CDS on it I was not using, or likely to use...
Since the barrel was a 1/9 twist, I didn't think my favorite load with the Sierra 77 SMK would work, so I dug around and found just over 200 loaded rounds with H 322/69 SMK, loaded to fit in an AR mag. This left it about .080" shy of the lands, so I thought it to be a good starting point.
I shot it today. First shot after a couple foulers was 3 MOA to the right and a half MOA low, I dialed corrections, wanting POI to be 1.5" high at 100 yards. One shot confirmed the POI was close so I shot 2 groups.
