What does the two piece firing pin do for use when it comes to safety? I understand that it does not let the firing pin get struck until the locking lug pushes it up. But why have it?

So, if for some reason the bolt is not locked (ie: by some idiot leaving the bolt lock out of the gun) it won't fire out of battery. A disaster if you're behind the bolt. When the bolt is fully in postion the 2 piece firing pin becomes mechanically one piece.

A one piece firing pin can detonate a primer without the bolt being locked.

I believe that it also prevents the gun from firing if the bolt is only partially locked, as in the the lever drops open a little bit. Even though the the trigger cannot fire the gun with the lever partially open, the hammer can be partially pulled back by hand and let fall on the pin.
