the prussians used them vs the French, had steam powered, on carts, air compressors on the battlefield, Napolean ordered anyone caught with an air rifle to be shot on sight.

Good info, but I noticed one thing...I'm sure he just misspoke, but he said Potomac River...I think he meant Columbia River.

And I'm gonna sticky this in here...as it is a very interesting piece of history.

A few years back I had a Belgian/ English copy of an Allen & Thurber Pepperbox pistol. A guy that had a gun-antique shop wanted it and was trying to trade me out of it instead of cash. He had one of these air rifles that was in “kit” form. I didn’t take it on trade because I had no way of knowing if parts were all there. Had it been intact , even non working I would have taken it. That’s only one I’ve ever come across.
