This is a thank you to a man who helped me begin my life in the outdoors.

He was a Big Brother, as my dad had left us before I was a toddler. I was 10, and he took me along on a rabbit hunt. We had just started out into the snow blown corn fields when we saw a rabbit. Alan whispered to me to shoot! I lifted the 20 gauge single shot and took aim and got it!

I remember the feeling of having killed an animal as I went to pick it up. It was a very sobering moment and a very exciting one at the same time.

We had it for a late lunch that day. He also bought me my first hunting knife, a Case. I had it for years before I finally lost it.

Thank you, Alan. You were a tremendous positive influence on a young boy that lasted a lifetime.

Tater: nice story, I believe most of us here had similar experiences that helped nurture our interest in the shooting sports. Think we could use more of that in today's world.
