I am brand new to any type of woodwork, particularly stock woodwork. I got a couple of broken stocks to practice on. One is a poly finish, the other I was told probably is poly finished, but may be oil finished.

My ultimate goal is to treat one of my surplus rifle's oil finished wood with Boiled Linseed Oil. But first, I will practice on the broken stocks.

I presume that I should remove the poly from the one I know is poly finished. What tools do I need? Is there a link for a step by step procedure?

Is there a special type of scrapper I should buy?

Thanks.
