Some time ago I promised to share my chrono results for the .30-30. I’m still not happy with the loads but have some results any way.

WW brass, CCI 200, all bullets roll crimped in cannelure

130g Speer FSP, 34.5g H4895, 2486fps, 2.10” @ 100 yds, 4 shots, 28.4fps S.D., 4x scope
150g Speer FSP, 34.5g H4895, 2440fps, 1.95” @ 100 yds, 4 shots, 9.8fps S.D., 4x scope
170g Speer FSP, 33.0g H4895, 2333fps, 1 shot

170g Nosler Partition RN, 33.0g H4895, 2313fps, 1 shot

130g Speer FSP, 34.5g W748, 2438fps, 0.95” @ 100 yds, 3 shots, 39.8fps S.D., 4x scope
150g Speer FSP, 34.5g W748, 2368fps, 1.55” @ 100 yds, 3 shots, 57.6fps S.D., 4x scope
170g Speer FSP, 32.0g W748, 2069fps, 0.90” @ 100 yds, 3 shots, 12.3fps S.D., 4x scope
170g Speer FSP, 34.5g W748, 2214fps, 1.85” @ 100 yds, 3 shots, 20.5fps S.D., 4x scope

As I said, I'm not particularly happy with these results - would like to shrink most of the Standard Deviations and group sizes. Oh, well.

Thanks for posting. What does your bore measure?

No idea! One thing is for sure, the bullets are nowhere near the lands.

I don't know why you are unhappy with the result. All of the results are better than ave hunting loads and they make a pretty good starting point to find a load tuned to your rifle with one or more of these bullets.
I'd really like to know how the 130 and 150 respond to .1 gr variations of powder, from 33.8 to 34.4. I bet there's a sweet spot in there somewhere.

I get phenominal accuracy with my ballard rifled 24 in. 336CB and about any load. I usually save it for lead. I've always gotten just so-so accuracy with good velocity out of my 336SS. I always thought it was the barrel band. I loosened it, and I tightened it. I then tried SPeer 130's with Varget. For some reason, this gun loves those things with Varget. Fairly easily get a 1/2 in. group with 3 shots, and the other two go into 1.2 in. ES is in the low teens. I use Lyman dies with Lee's FC. This the 3rd die for 30-30 I've used. I''ve used RCBS and Lee, and found this gun does better with Lyman for some reason. The other two always have some limitation. Preliminary tests of the Speer 150's looks very good as well. This gun is very easily upset if you get the barrel too hot. Its a good hunter, and thats really all I care about. Simply loves the Leverevolution, and shoots them very accurately. I also get good accuracy with 748, but it has to be close to or at max. It likes Paco Kelly's loads.

This gun also does not like H4895, but loves IMR4895. 35gr. of the IMR, and used with the leverevolution bullet beats the factory load for me. Ii pulled 5 bullets, by the way. Pressure expansion is what I have yet to measure. Did not have sticky extraction.

I think these results are pretty decent . Excellent when you consider you are only using a 4x scope. Usually when I work up loads I use a 20x Leupold.

I wish you had shot three shots with the 170 Noslers. I have a box of those and the 150 Barnes that I have not tried.

In my opinion that right there is a great load. You also might want to try changing bullets. I have had really good luck with the Hornady 170g flat points.

Nice groups but too slow for my purposes.

Picked up a used Leupold Vari-X II 2-7x33 at the Tanner gun show today, $145. Have the VX-II 2-7x33 on my .45-70 and consider it just about the perfect scope for Marlins. Will swap the Leupold M8-4x that is on the .30-30 now with the 2-7x. Boosting the magnification from 4x to 7x might help. We'll see.

Coyote hunter,

I was wondering why you are using W748 & H4895?
I've not used them myself because of the velocity results similar to what you obtained.
Just wondering is all.

I used W748 because my buddy got a 4fps Extreme Spread for 5 shots with the Speer 150g bullet. He also gets good accuracy. Same load in my rifle wasn't nearly as consistent.

Not sure what you mean by you haven't used these powders "because of the velocity results similar to what you obtained." I thought the H4895 was providing very good velocity and the W748 was pretty decent.

I have the Paco Kelly article, have even had the privilege of communicating with him via email a couple of times.

His data is something I look at from time to time, to compare to other sources.

One thing I have to admit - as a big bore shooter I load the .45-70 to 40,000 CUP pressures. I can't think of any reason why the .30-30 can't be loaded to the same pressures in a modern Marlin. The rub, of course, is I don't have a pressure gage nor do I have data known to be at the 40,000 CUP pressure level.

Some more loads to try with your W-748 is 37 grains 170gr bullet. hornady's 3rd edition manual has the max for this powder at 39 but the 37 seems to give the smallest deviation and a honest 2,332 fps out of a 20in 336 barrel.

Or one I've used in 150gr useing h-335 (very good powder for the 30-30) at 39 gr at 2,610 fps with as little as 3fps deviation!!Lyman reloading handbook 46th edition has this listing.
now hornady's new load has the 160 listed as 2400 fps out of a 24in barrel zeroed .2in high (?) at 200 yards and 12.1 low at 300 with 1699 fps and 1025ft-lb
The 150gr bullet above shows on my ballistic calculator with a 200 yard zero to be 8.94in low at 300 with 1980fps and 1306 ft-lbs the numbers jump if I load a boatail.

I'm useing Re-7 and nickle plated cases for 150 & 170 and I'm getting some good results just none are "listed rounds"

I like Paco too he is a class act.

In the .30/30, you really need to try Reloader 15.

I too have gotten good accuracy with IMR-3031, H4895 (my second favorite powder for .30/30) and Win 748.

None of them quite measure up to Rl-15 in the .30/30.

The max load of 36.0gr shows 2,400fps+ from my 20" bbl, but 35.0 gets 2,380 and fabulous accuracy (approx. 1.0" 3-shots @ 100yds) With the Rem 150 Cor-lokt is "dynamite" on Georgia Whitetails.

With the 170gr Bullets, 34.0 is max for over 2,300fps. 33.0 is said to also reach 2,300fps and is likewise very accurate.

I plan on trying some this coming fall on my "backyard" deer.

Will let you know about the data once I get it chrono'd.

Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of building a new house and range. Also, playing with a .300 Rem Ultra Mag project.

Will report back later on .30/30 170gr loads.
