The new stock arrived today from Midwest Gunworks, it's gorgeous. Much nicer wood than the original but it still matches nicely with the fore end. Came with a new rubber buttplate too.

I had back surgery a week ago today, and am still not confident enough to change the stock. I'll get it done soon and get some new pics up. It'll probably be a few months before I shoot it, I can't find any .444 brass anyway.

Here's the Winchester .444 (top) with the replacement stock. Along with a couple of my other leverguns.

Where did you get that stock?
I know this is very old, but I missed it before. The stock came from Midwest Gun Works.

I needed some $$ shortly after I bought the Winchester, and just couldn't come to terms with that idiotic safety that's even worse on a Big Bore 94 ... So I sold the Winchester .444

What do you shoot in Germany with that big bore?
I'll never forget the first red stag I saw in Germany, when I was there in the Air Force.

I was stationed at Bitburg, in the Eifel mountains. A friend had just moved to a new place north of the base, higher up in the mountains. My wife and I went up there for a visit one weekend, rounded a curve and there it was ... like a 3/4 scale bull elk with a nice rack standing in the middle of the road.

There was also a herd of smaller red deer that lived in the woods behind our house. They would come out on the hillside almost every night. I have pics somewhere.

I can't believe I hadn't posted this here before now.

1965 .444 customized by John Gallagher. I'm still not sure what the metal finish is, it's either a hard chrome finish or a cerakote type finish. Whatever it is, it's tough, not even a scratch where the lever pivots.

I'm planning to add a Lyman receiver sight.

It's been cut down to a 19 inch barrel

Hand cut checkering and a nice oil finish on the wood

Here you can see the button magazine and low profile Skinner rear sight
