Well, I've just had personal proof as to the quality of Marlin customer service. When I called about the defective front base for my 917V, I was told it would take two weeks to get a replacement to me. In today's mail I received an envelope from Marlin containing not just a front base but a complete set.

Bravo, Marlin!

That's good to hear. As was stated I think they buy the mounts in bulk from a scope manufacturor. Parley
