Safari Grade 444 Success!!!!!! New News!

Finished up on the first phase of testing the Safari Grade 444 Project this morning. I pushed a BTB 405 through the chrono at 2171 fps (4000+ ft lbs). There were no pressure signs...everything went according to plan....nothing was amiss.....and, this modification still has a lot more to give! But, If a 400 grain bullet at 2150+fps will take any game animal on earth, I really dont see a need to continue on!!! I have read and been told for many years that the 444 cant take large, or large dangerous game. Well, this modification "proves" that the 444 in a Marlin lever gun has the potential to do just that...take "any" game animal that walks the earth!!! The ballistics mimic the 450-400 Nitro Express or 404 Jeffery, and I believe with more load development could approach the 416 Rigby. Phase two will consist of putting together some accurate loads around the 2150 to 2200fps mark, and I will call this a done deal with the 405 grain bullet. I also ran a 300 grain bullet through the chrono at 2400+ fps. More works needs to be done here with my goal being 2500+ fps. As I have been working on this modification, I have come to realize that it is very versatile.....allowing for light loads like those that would be used for deer up close, or, factory load COL's to be shot with accuracy, yet, this modification has the potential to deliver outstanding top end power for any large or large dangerous game species...including, with the right bullet, large and dangerous African game. I believe that this modification in a Marlin lever gun could truly be a "one gun" hunters "go to gun" for anything from deer on up...."the perfect all around cartridge....in the perfect all around rifle". It dont get no better than that! ;D

Re: Safari Grade 444 Success!!!!!!

That is cool. How bad was the recoil?
Re: Safari Grade 444 Success!!!!!!

Not bad at all....It recoils much less that my "444 Peashooter" project gun (6 pounds).....I would say that it is actually comfortable to shoot (about 8 1/2 pounds)....but, it is much more than my 35 Rem! ;D

Re: Safari Grade 444 Success!!!!!!

Well done, I have been watching with great interest. Steve!! 8)
Re: Safari Grade 444 Success!!!!!!

Thanks Steve...its been a long time coming....but, everything has worked out very well. It is kind of an emotional thing when you put so much of yourself into a project, and you finally reap the rewards. Today, life has been good to me!
Re: Safari Grade 444 Success!!!!!!

This is some interesting stuff. I have to ask, if you may, how much does a modification like that cost when it is done?
Re: Safari Grade 444 Success!!!!!!

I dont know.....never really thought about that. There is a lot that goes into this though...major internal parts modifications, throating, hand fitting, etc, but, there is no rechambering, rethreading, or, a new barrel required...nothing that would drive the cost sky high. Its the same ol' 444, but, it has been taken to its performance potential extreme, with everything that Marlin gives us when we purchase the rifle. This would be a lot of power to be had, for very little investment.

I'm still reading and watching. Thanks for sharing today Flat Top!
Re: Safari Grade 444 Success!!!!!!

Congratulations in your success!

You will not have a problem getting 2500fps with a 300gr hardcast bullet ;D

Now get to work on my wifes 444superMagnum! ::)

Thanks Starrbow!................nope, no problem with 2500 at all!!!! ;D

.............Ah yes! The "infamous" 444 Super Magnum..........I am still crackin up over that thread!!!
Re: Safari Grade 444 Success!!!!!!

Congrats !!! but does this mean the little custom double rifle is a scratched plan now ? ;D

Re: Safari Grade 444 Success!!!!!!

Just seeing this thread for the first time and I'm probably the umph-teen person stoked for you and your success Flat.

I have long thought that should my cape buffalo hunt eveer present itself that a lever is the route i will go. Nice to see that the 444 ( which i own ) can be added to the potential list along side the 45/70.
Re: Safari Grade 444 Success!!!!!!

Success!!!! 8) Flat Top, that is fantastic! Kinda narrows the so called "gap" between the 444 and the 45-70. ;) This has been a great read, lookin forward to hearing about the journey with the 300 gr trip to 2500+fps. (Maybe close to 2600?). Congrats again, I need to go back and read your mods over and over. Sure I'll never get it done, but nice to know info. As my 6 year old says," you rock, dude!" ;D DP

Re: Safari Grade 444 Success!!!!!!

Jack; No...the double in 444 is still a future consideration...some day.

Tony65X55; Thanks! There is still more work to do, but, the velocity/pressure hurdle has been overcome, and the rifle feeds, cycles, and ejects, as it should. I would consider the "basics" accomplished after I get done working with the 300 grain bullet. After that, maybe I can do some "experimenting" as time permits to improve on what I have done so far....but, I am happy with the results. As it stands, this modification and its ballistic accomplishment is all that is needed for anything, anywhere.

rooterpig;.........I dont know...just some old fart that wondered by! I asked him to hold the rifle and told him to "point here" to get picture proof of the "moment"!!! ;D

Lakota; Thanks! The key to taking large game is having the correct bullet (weight, shape, mass) with a suitable momentum at impact to drive deep and make the kill. 400 grain, .400 bore class bullets have been taking large game cleanly for a long time. It seems, from the history of large game hunting that I have studied over the years, that velocities that will produce 4000+ ft lbs with a 400 grain bullet are excellent for the task....no more is really needed, be it in bullet weight or velocity. As I mentioned before, the 404 Jeffery, and the 450-400 NE, up to the 416 Rigby velocities (2100 to 2350 fps) have been ideal in this respect (with a 400 to 410 grain bullet), and are still much favored by those who hunt African large game....these cartridges are legendary in thier performance and appeal. They offer the hunter a standard weight rifle (8 1/2 to 9 1/2 pounds), that is easily controllable (lower recoil than the "big boys"), can be carried afield all day long, and has the power to take large game in thick cover, yet, has the versatility to take smaller game animals at longer ranges. This is where I set my goal for the Safari Grade 444....I wanted all of the above in a lever gun, and the 444 XLR in its modified form fit the bill to a "T".

dpe.ahoy; Thanks! There is no gap...this modified 444 can stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the greatest (and proven) African large game cartridges ever devised. If I was to take this to the limit, and use custom mixed powders (which would really limit the use of this modification for the general shooting public), I could push the 405 to 2400+ fps easily...at 5000+ ft lbs, or, the 300 grain bullet at 2800+ fps, at 5000+ ft lbs, but, I ask myself why, when the modification as it stands now is so perfectly well balanced a combination of controllability and power. In the hands of a decent shooter/hunter, this is all I can see that would be needed....history tells me so....besides, to get this kind of power from most lever guns requires barrel changes, custom wildcat cartridges, rechambering and/or rethreading...the works....and that is expensive. This modification allows for standard reloading equipment and components, no special machine work, etc. It is just your factory built 444.....modified and upgraded to allow for its full potential to be realized....and, that is the beauty of this modification. I do rock...every time I pull the trigger on the SG 444!!! ;D
