Being as I'm the gun-guy in my circle I was brought a 29-2 S&W .44 Mag. During it's "cleaning"/reason for being dumped in my lap someone has lost the Hand spring. He's ordered a new one but since I didn't get to take it out, I'm wondering before I mess with it, how does it fit properly in place? Also it has another issue. you have to smack the cylinder open. This being the reason for it's "cleaning" previously. He could barely get the cylinder to swing out on it. I took out the pin for the locking bolt and with it removed the cylinder swings open just easy as can be. Upon inspection though I can't really see any burrs or anything stopping it from moving to cause it to be so difficult to open. Any ideas on this?

Sounds to me like the ejector rod has unscrewed and backed out a little, causing the problem you describe. Remove the yoke from the cylinder, put a couple of fired cases in opposing chambers, and using a padded vise or grips, tighten the ejector rod fully.

As for the hand spring...describing the three handed operation to reinstall one of these is beyond my literary skill. I'll see if I can find a video that shows the procedure.

No video, but I did find this diagram that shows the hand spring in its proper position. Keep in mind the spring is actually between the two "halves" of the trigger, inside the slot milled in the upper half of the trigger.

Hope this is helpful.

Good deal, I think I can get the spring in and I'll toss a couple snap caps in the cylinder in a few minutes and see if that'll do it.

Once again thanks for the input on that. Got the spring in no problem and that fixed the cylinder hangup. Works like a brand new one now.
