Finally got around to having a Lyman tang sight put on my 1895. In the destructions Lyman recommends removing the rear sight. Is that just a straight knock out with a brass drift? Knock out left to right facing forward?
Thanks

Yes, remove towards the right side......right side if you're shouldering looking down the line of sights. If you're going to use brass just be careful so not to marr the bluing up....probably safer to use a wood dowel and place a business card under the sight so it doesn't scratch the barrel.

I always put a filler in the sight dovetail too. I've read that when you remove the sight it causes a weak spot in the barrel and is good to fill it with a dovetail filler.......don't know how true that is, but it looks better with one too.

Thank you for the advice six_gunz. I have also heard that is better to use the sight blank. Not to mention that this is a beautiful rifle with a great piece of wood on it and it would mar the appearance to leave the dovetail empty.

Out of curiosity, how does it shoot/handle with the sight in that location? I've seen a lot of rifles with the same set up but I've never actually handled one.

Don't know yet ass I have only dry fired. It is sort of in the way for the right thumb but it is sure quick on target. I am loading some 300 and 350 grain cast bullets and 5744 - Hope to be able to let you know next weekend.
