I almost put this in the thread about good experiences with Remington made guns, but then second guessed because Im not sure. From what I read in several posts, Remington has used left over Marlin-made barrels sometimes with thier own receivers. They have apparently also obtained permission to use the Marlin address on barrells they make themselves. I would assume however that they would use the REM proofmark even on barrells so addressed? If all of this is correct, I think my 1894CSS has an original Marlin Barrell and perhaps a Remington receiver? It has the JM proofmark on the left side of the barrell. The serial number is 91etc on the left side of the receiver. Or have I misunderstood something somewhere along the way?

I would like to know just for the sake of knowing. But regardless I love the rifle, it functions great.

If it has the "JM" proof mark on the barrell, then it was made by Marlin before Remington took them over. The ones with the "REP" on the barrells are the one's that Remington made with the leftover barrells from Conn. At least that is what I have come to understand here on MO.

Think of it this way, that JM or REP goes on the gun after the assembly is complete. If it has a REP it was assembled in NY by Rem. Where the barrel and receiver were manufactured is less certain.

Close but not quite accurate. Remington took over control of Marlin and production in 2008. They closed the plant and moved operations to Ilion in 2010.
