Soon to acquire a 45/70 Guide and looking into reloading. I have 3 boxes of Hornady 325 FTX and realize the cases for these are a little shorter than regular brass. Does this restrict my reloading to just using the FTX bullets or is it still possible to use regular cast bullets?

I have not tried "normal" bullets but you can also use the Hornady 250gr monoflex. I read somewhere that others are doing it in bolt and single shot that doesn't need a good crimp.

Cast will be fine. Set OAL to your gun.
Clean your bore and chamber regularly.
Buy a few hundred cases from Starline.
Forget about brass for a LONG time.

You need to buy Hornady new dimension dies or modify they ones you got to crimp the boolit.
Even the Lee FCD will not work with the hornady short 45-70 brass w/o modification to the die.

I load cast in mine, 405 gr from Mi Cast set to the crimp groove. Works fine in my Handi, not sure about a Marlin.

I use cast in the LE brass loading with my Hornady dies and have zero problems.
