I have one of the new Ruglins in 45/70 and I have acquired some Starline brass.

I have Remington 405gr FN and 300gr HP headed my way.

I have never loaded for 45-70.

I'd like to hear about experiences you've had with these bullets.

I'd also like to hear about anything that you believe will be helpful concerning reloading for the 45-70.

Thanks for the help and I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!!

Congrats on the Ruglin! I load the 405 gr FN over 13 grains of Unique. Fairly easy on the shoulder and they do everything I need or want from my 45-70's. I have no experience with the 300 gr. HP's.

I have used IMR-4198 with 405 gr hard cast and the 400 gr Speer jacketed FN bullet. That powder works very well with my Marlin 1895SS.

38 grains gives me about 1500 FPS with jacketed 400 grain. A little quicker with cast.

50 gr with 300 grain Hornady is a little over 2100 FPS for a flatter trajectory but bigger recoil. 38 grains is about 1825 with the 300 grain.

15 grain Unique with a 425 GT bullet sized 460 works with EVERY Marlin I have ever owned. My most accurate load.
