Reboring Handi-Rifle 30/30 to ???

1150 Views 32 Replies 25 Participants Last post by  joefabrygel
Hello all.

I've got a Handi-rifle that I purchased in 2001 with an extra 30-30 Win barrel.

I've already got a Marlin 336 in 30-30 so I'm thinking to rebore to another caliber for fun and deer and hog hunting.

I'm set up to reload 375 Winchester so that is one option.

I know 38-55 is an option and 35-30/30 is an intriguing option too but I'd need to see about reloading dies for that.

Do I have other options for reboring that use the same rim as 30/30? Opinions welcomed, thanks!

For sure, when thinking about adding a caliber to your collection, check the availability and cost of : ammo, dies, bullets, cases etc. Know your comfort level, some calibers are an Easter egg hunt to find ammo/reloading components for, and can be frustrating at times. If you are into rare or obsolete rounds then that pain is part of the experience, and viewed as something positive to have something rare/unique, but if you are not into it, don't go there.

Do you handload and/or cast bullets? I happen to like the old .30-30 a lot; but I haven't fired my levers in years. You can do a lot of "tinkering" with bolt guns or a break-open like your Handi. Almost all of the .308" components become possibilities, not just round or flat-nosed bullets meant for tubular magazines. My last buck fell to a 150 gr. 'Combined Technologies" Ballistic Silvertip. They were a team effort by Nosler & Winchester, and probably haven't been produced in a few years; but wow - not your average performance from a round-nose factory load!
If all that isn't your cup of tea and your solution is a re-bore... I have no advice - I couldn't make a choice for myself without months of serious consideration. :) It's a choice that gets too personal; I don't begrudge anyone about their favorite cartridges, we all know what works for us. But it's fun to look at all the cartridges out there & try to figure out our next new favorite. Good luck with that! Keep us posted, 'cuz we're all nosey, I mean curious.... :)

Thanks for all the suggestions and comments everyone. I had loaned this rifle to my Father some time ago and it had sat enough in non-climate controlled environment that it had some rust on the barrel.

I took off the old scope base and scope and put on a new EGM base with a Leuopold 2x7 and sighted that in today. After getting on the paper I had a 1/2" group going with 2 shots and the third brought it to 1.4" at 100 yards. I may have pulled that one but it is shooting well. It's good to hunt!

I had the trigger lightened by NEF when I bought this additional barrel and it isn't bad. I love the cartridge ejector rather than an extractor.

I think for the time being I'm going to spend the money on cerakoting the barrel (and maybe the receiver) to address the rusting and make it a more all weather rifle.

I do reload so I'm going to follow the path AdirondakAl suggested. I have lots of 308 spitzer bullets and can experiment to my heart's content.

I can always rebore later but for now I'll cerakote and play with loads.

It's been nice to get to know this rifle again. I bought it for $220 at a Walmart in 2001 so I'm money ahead no matter what I do!

Have a great day and good shooting everyone!

Joe

That's going to be a fun little gun! I put a Leupold 2-7X on one of my .30-30 bolt actions ("great minds think alike...") :) for my 'hunter'. I kind of always wanted to try 180 gr. bullets, but couldn't find good data. Just as well, they're made for the faster .30-cals. and probably aren't worth the powder & primers to try. I use the published 170 gr. .30-30 data for 165 & 168 grain bullets. Look at a 170 round-nose next to a 165 btsp, there's less bearing surface, so less friction. I have a bunch of pulled 165 BTSP's, and found a load at about 1850 FPS that's fun for just for punching paper. I would have no hesitation to boost it up and take it to the field for deer. And you have all those light 100-130 grain choices out there for 'chucks, etc.; you don't need a cannelure or heavy crimp because you're single-loading the rounds anyway. If, or when, it ever gets boring you still have that option to rebore it. Good luck and have fun (safely, of course)!

I second the vote for a re- chamber to 30-30 Ackley improved. Put a scope on it and take advantage of some extended range accuracy?

I think you made a good choice. My favorite caliber to experiment with is the 30-30. Mine are levers so I single load when experimenting. So far I have played with 100 gr SJ, 125 HP and pointed, 130 varmint bullet, 150 Berrys plated, 150 and 170 Speer hot core. I may have left out some. I have been on the fence about buying a 30-30 single shot. If I were to rebore it would be in .356.

Just me but I always thought that rechambering a Handi 30-30 to 30-40 Krag would be near perfect.

It might be just me but I would keep the barrel in 30-30. Re-boring will run about $250 the last time I had it done. I enjoy playing with my 30-30 with everything from 100 gr RN bullets to 130 gr SP to heavy weights. I often think about buying a single shot 30-30 just to play with. You can play with COL more than with a lever. If I just had to re-bore it it would bbe in .356.

Nosler 125 gr ballistic tips are near deer magic at 30/30 speeds. I use them in my H&R.

I just received the cerakoted rifle back. (Had loaned it to my Dad and it developed some barrel rust in his storage area) I love it and the pictures don't do it justice.

Now to remount the scope and start shooting!
