My friend Lee who runs my LGS has an unopened can (1 lb) of Hercules 2400 powder selling for $20.....it's in beautiful factory new condition with seal intact, looks like it was made yesterday. I get that I probably can't use it for reloading, and I have plenty of A2400 on hand anyway, but question is, is it worth buying for the cool factor of it?

Because it's only one pound....not worth developing a load for only a few hundred rounds of ammo...

Me Too! Heck, I load some stuff without developing the best recipe and just plink with it sometimes (mostly stuff like 38 specials for the 1894), and then there's the snake shot stuff where it doesn't matter a lot......yep, I'd snatch it up for sure!

Here's a study comparing Herucles to Alliant 2400, with velocity and pressure results. Conclusion, the difference (~2%) was no more than typical lot to lot variations. No more development needed than when opening a new can.

for 20 bucks I would pick it up for the cool factor and then use it for a SHTF scenario if you don't want to develop a load for it....

I vote to Buy it, and then sell it to buy what you want.

To heck with the cool factor.......I'd buy it now just to hoard it. 2400 has been the only magnum handgun powder that I've been able to find in the last year. I've developed 45 LC and 44 Mag loads for it within this last year, and now I need to work on 357 Mag. I had been an exculsive H-110 user until the shortages hit. I have a lot of 2400 now, and I want more. So, when I find it.....I buy it.

For the $20 price I would have never set it back on the shelf!?, it's the second most burnt powder from my bench!, second only to IMR 4064.
