While looking to the future, I decided to stock up on powder to insure my supply for the coming years. Powder will remain useful for many years in storage (read, waiting to be loaded) if conditions are maintained properly.

I have used Re7 and Unique for a large variety of my needs. While I still have other powders available, these 2 are in quantity. Not always the highest velocities, but consistent accuracy.

Re7 is used for 30-30, 45-70, 308, 444, 38-55, 223

Unique is used for 30-30, 45-70, 38-55, 38/357, 44mag, 45acp, 45 Colt,380/9mm and 40 Short and Weak. Not to mention the ability for use as reduced loads in bottle necks such as .30-'06.

Not mentioned above, IMR4064 can be used for most of the above rifle ca'tridges as well as .30-'06 and 270.

While I know there are others to perform as these do, my choices for inventory reduction have proven, for me, to be great performers.

I'm in the process of beating down my inventory of rifle powders, specifically, and trying to standardize. Unique will always be on the bench and in abundance, but I'm shuffing the rifle powders around. I'm trying to see if I can get down to 2 IMR powders for the 5.56mm, .30-30, 7.62mm, and .30-06, but I may have to have a specific powder for the big .348WCF (currently H4831 due to lack of loading data for anything else, although Hodgdon's data now shows IMR4895/4064 for both the 200grn and 250grn bullets! ;D)

I can't imagine anything more horrid than being limited to two powders, but if it came to pass I could do okay with Unique and IMR-4895. I'd whine, fuss and complain constantly, but I'd do it between range trips.

What drives people to think up these nightmarish scenarios, anyway? Do you like slasher movies, too? ::)

Never said I was limited to two. Two fill most of my needs. I have some 13 or so powders at the bench. Several seldom used powders will be eventually used up and not replaced, ie: blue dot. Herco..........buying 5 and 8 #s at a time sure does simplify things.

I've been using Hodgdon Varget in competition for several years and have had such success I now use it in everything possible. So far I have used it in .222 through 45-70 up to 405 grain bullets. There are a lot of powders in my loading room gathering dust since I started using Varget. It just works and works well.

If I had to do it with one powder, Unique or Black powder would do it.

If I had to have only two powders, I would get a headache, but might be able to get by with your original two. Reloader 7 and Unique.

I am phasing out Varget in favor of IMR8208XBR due to better load density and much smoother metering. H4350, LilGun, and Trailboss round things out, with AA#2 and HP38 (Winchester 231) for pistol and reduced 25-20 loads. Couldn't cover the 10 cartridges I load for safely with 2 powders.
