Polish 1895 bolt assy?

I have a newly acquired 1895CBC 45-70 rifle; rapidly becoming a favored gun. The only thing I'm thinking of modifying is to polish the bolt. Currently the bolt has dull fine line vertical machined finish, that traps powder residue like iron to a magnet. In the past I have polished surfaces like this using 400 grit abrasive paper followed by an ultra fine grit 1000-1500 abrasive and then go to work polishing with my Dremel tool. Is there any reason not to do this? Thanks

Depends on what surfaces you're polishing, and how much material you remove. A couple wrong moves can ruin your bolt and/or make the gun dangerous to fire. Can you post some pics of what you intend to do?

Looks good as long as you didn't mess with the vertical locking surface near the bolt's rear.
