My father bought a 989 M2 new and as far as I can tell, never shot it. And yes, it still has the original front sights. I would like to preserve it but still use it at the range with my grandkids. Can any one tell me what was used as the original finish on the stock? Also, can you tell from the serial number (68176494) what the manufacture date was? Thanks for any help you can offer!

68 = 1968 and the finish is likely Marshield... Can you post pics?

And it is the rear sight that is almost always lost as they where changed out for a scope a lot...

I thought Mar-shield came around as a finish in '70...
