I just got an old 336 30-30 that has no cross bolt safety on it. The number is S174XX not sure it age.
It has no checkering on the walnut. I ordered a 3/8 wide front sight and it was too big.
How many different sizes of front sights were used on the guns? Anyway the other size offered is 1/4"
that most likely fits my gun.
I like this 336 a lot more then the new 6 year old version I have, not that there is anything wrong with it.
Will my new 336 smooth up to be like the old action feels some day?

The "S" prefix SN dates your rifle to 1958-59. The model or a pic might be helpful for identifying the sight.
I think your new Marlin will "wear in" with use, sometimes a little judicious polishing can help.
