Good morning. New to Marlin formula. I recently picked up a 1957 336 30 30..about 80% grade. Bluing looks decent. No pitting. A tad surface rust at end of barrel. Sight screws missing. Some one installed fiber optic sights on it...those coming off ASAP. The same day I had a friend offer to sell me his 1997 Marlin 336 30 30 in perfect condition. I bought it. I now have two. One 20 years old which I am going to scope and hunt with and the 60 year old one which I like due to being vintage.
Like I said, I am keeping newer version but torn between selling 1957 P serial number or keeping and restoring. It would be a good project for me. Wood need little work...no cracks, just polishing and buffing. Maybe rebluing and sight replacement.
Do imsell now? Do I restore and sell? Or do restore and keep? I love the thought of owning a 57 336 but two of same gun Is my question.
Welcome to the forum. Congrats on your purchases :congrats:
Many folks here own multiple Marlin rifles in the same caliber or similar caliber because we're in love with these guns roud:
I have a couple of duplicates. The older ones are my babies.
I would keep both. Clean off any rust on the 1957, replace any missing parts, oil and enjoy it. I wouldn't re-blue it, as it takes away from it's character & value.
Have you had a chance to shoot the 1957 yet? If the 1957 doesn't shoot well, I would say go ahead & restore/ rebarrel it. Or sell it.
But that's just my opinion. Everyone is different. Your guns, your preference. Good luck. Would love to see pictures of both because we love pictures
There are many Marlin owners who own two or more 336 in the same caliber or even win. 94 and M. 336 in 30-30. If you don't need the money at this time I would keep both, it's a good thing to have a backup especially in the same caliber no need to carry two different cartridges. I say restore the 1957 336 and if the 57 336 is drill tap scope both if not leave as is. As far as rebluing the whole 1957 336 rifle, I would just clean the
rust at end of barrel
and use a bluing pen to protect the metal and enjoy.

Thanks. I will take photos of 57 336 and post. Also, when I received it had fiber optic sights installed.....where do I get quality original type sights for my 336?
You might try this place... You'll have to Fax him... He's retired and doesn't do phones anymore... Look in the second column, Marbles sights are pretty close to original...
Very Nice. Your rifle looks much better than 80% in these photos. I'd keep it and leave it be other than changing the sights. If you aren't hurting for money I'd keep the newer one as well. Nothing wrong with having two Marlin 30-30's and it could be the beginning of a much larger family of Marlins. BTW It's called Marlinitis.
Welcome from southern Ohio. Keep it, that just my opinion. And pictures would greatly appreciated, if not I'll be "forced" to buy something to post pictures of. Lol.
Very good looking rifle!! And that goes to show you how slow I am, no pictures before I start typing a post, and pictures appear before I send the post.
Thanks from Florida! Also, any one heard of using a larger 307 Winchester {never heard of the round} or 308 in these 30-30's for longer distances? I heard they can be modified...not sure...and def would not to damage it.
There are many variants on the 336 frame... A 336ER ( extended range ) I believe was a .356... The 308MX a true 300 yard rifle... The 338MX, it's big brother... And more...
Now, I ring 300 yard 8" dingers with my 336W in .30-30, how far do you want to shoot and are you hunting or target shooting...
I will be hunting deer in New Mexico. Looking for a scope to accommodate 200-300 yds. Also need to know what to put on wood for protection and glossy shine.
I use a Redfield Revolution 2x7x33 on my 336W and the same in 3x9x40 on my 308MX... Both good to 300 yards... Only thing you want is good terminal hitting power and accuracy out that far...
Make sure whatever round you choose has velocity and power out that far...
If you do use the Hornady LE ammo you might like to change the follower. Look into the loading gate if you don't see a reddish follower you can put one flat nose or round nose cartridge in first and the rest leverevolution (LE) cartridges in the magazine tube, this will work. Because the pointy nose of the LE ammo can slip to the side of the older rounded follower and jam causing the magazine spring to slow down and the next cartridge not to fully engage on to the carrier when cycling the action. You can buy the new red plastic follower and install it cheaply.

keep both, clean up that old one and shoot it ,do not restore .I know a fella real well that realized a while back that he had 12 30/30 rifles ,he has sold down to 7 and I am comfortable with that number .so two is good
