Good morning. New to Marlin formula. I recently picked up a 1957 336 30 30..about 80% grade. Bluing looks decent. No pitting. A tad surface rust at end of barrel. Sight screws missing. Some one installed fiber optic sights on it...those coming off ASAP. The same day I had a friend offer to sell me his 1997 Marlin 336 30 30 in perfect condition. I bought it. I now have two. One 20 years old which I am going to scope and hunt with and the 60 year old one which I like due to being vintage.

Like I said, I am keeping newer version but torn between selling 1957 P serial number or keeping and restoring. It would be a good project for me. Wood need little work...no cracks, just polishing and buffing. Maybe rebluing and sight replacement.

Do imsell now? Do I restore and sell? Or do restore and keep? I love the thought of owning a 57 336 but two of same gun Is my question.

I’m not sure if it has a protective coat or not. Obviously it is not very smooth like my newer Marlin...after all, it is 61 years old now. Is their a way to smooth it out with out damaging any finish? I would hate to destroy and original finish....I’d like to just clean, possible smooth and wax to make it look good.

If any one could give step by step I’d appreciate it. All,you tube videos are refinishing....Imwant to keep original finish. Doesn’t a total refinish lessen the value of the gun?

Since acquiring my Marlin I have done research. The serial number is P noting 1957 but that year Marlin introduced white lines on the butt pad and and a pistol grip cap with the white line. As you can see in my pics, I have no pistol, grip cap or any white lines. Any thoughts? Could,it be a left over ‘56?

Can anyone let me know what type of sights went on it? Like I said, serial number states it is a 57 but stock looks like a 56. I have emailed Marlin but no reply. Also, where would I get the sights once figured out which type?
