Good morning. New to Marlin formula. I recently picked up a 1957 336 30 30..about 80% grade. Bluing looks decent. No pitting. A tad surface rust at end of barrel. Sight screws missing. Some one installed fiber optic sights on it...those coming off ASAP. The same day I had a friend offer to sell me his 1997 Marlin 336 30 30 in perfect condition. I bought it. I now have two. One 20 years old which I am going to scope and hunt with and the 60 year old one which I like due to being vintage.

Like I said, I am keeping newer version but torn between selling 1957 P serial number or keeping and restoring. It would be a good project for me. Wood need little work...no cracks, just polishing and buffing. Maybe rebluing and sight replacement.

Do imsell now? Do I restore and sell? Or do restore and keep? I love the thought of owning a 57 336 but two of same gun Is my question.

Many folks here own multiple Marlin rifles in the same caliber or similar caliber because we're in love with these guns roud:
I have a couple of duplicates. The older ones are my babies.

I would keep both. Clean off any rust on the 1957, replace any missing parts, oil and enjoy it. I wouldn't re-blue it, as it takes away from it's character & value.
Have you had a chance to shoot the 1957 yet? If the 1957 doesn't shoot well, I would say go ahead & restore/ rebarrel it. Or sell it.
But that's just my opinion. Everyone is different. Your guns, your preference. Good luck. Would love to see pictures of both because we love pictures :biggrin:

There are many Marlin owners who own two or more 336 in the same caliber or even win. 94 and M. 336 in 30-30. If you don't need the money at this time I would keep both, it's a good thing to have a backup especially in the same caliber no need to carry two different cartridges. I say restore the 1957 336 and if the 57 336 is drill tap scope both if not leave as is. As far as rebluing the whole 1957 336 rifle, I would just clean the

rust at end of barrel​

and use a bluing pen to protect the metal and enjoy.

Any thoughts on wood stock etc? Oil? Carnuba wax? Steel wool XXXX? No scratches just a bit textured from grain raising and lowering over last 61 years

You might try this place... You'll have to Fax him... He's retired and doesn't do phones anymore... Look in the second column, Marbles sights are pretty close to original...

Thanks from Florida! Also, any one heard of using a larger 307 Winchester {never heard of the round} or 308 in these 30-30's for longer distances? I heard they can be modified...not sure...and def would not to damage it.
