I purchased my first Marlin a XT-17V chambered in 17 HMR. ;D
New from Dick's Sporting Goods,(in Avon,Indiana) they just came in and was one of the first sold by them. I like the heavy barrel and the walnut stock, clean lines.
Now, I took it apart to clean before taking it to the range and work with the scope. Was suprised how long it took to clean the black and what looked like rust from inside the barrel. Used Bore cleaner then Cleaner Lube, must have used half a box of cleaning pads. Using a bore brush and plenty of bore cleaner it finley was clean and ready to go.
I have two Ruger's and never had that dirty a rifle from them.
Should I return it after spending two hours cleaning it ? Or, just take it to the range and see how it shoots? Thanks for any feed back.

My XT22 was pretty much clean, a little crud in the barrel but nothing like you describe. Great little shooter.
If your bore cleaned up good i wouldn't worry about it. The way the weather has been it may have gotten some condensation during temperature swings. Shoot it for a while and see how it holds up. If it rusts back up send it back.
Best of luck, they're nice rifles!
