My buddy & I drew tags for Javelina. We'll be in the Silver City, New Mexico area for the February 1-15, 2005 hunt.

I've never been down that way or hunted that kind of critter.

My buddy lived down that way years ago, but like I said, this is all new to me.

We might get into some feral hog hunting, which would be a real bonus!

I've got a number of rifles in various calibers, .30-30, .35 rem, .30-06, 7.62 x 39, 7mm, .444, .45-70. I might have access to a .22-250.

I'm used to hunting blacktail deer, elk and bear in Washington state.

Any thoughts or advice?

Hog King,

Any of the calibers you have listed will take a Javelina. I would suggest picking the right caliber based on the type of country, say long range vs short range, thick vs open.

Also, try to place your shot behind the shoulders (Heart) or in the Head. In my experience they usually run on a rib (Lung) shot.

Hope this helps and good luck on your hunt
