Hey Matthew - welcome to MO and greetings from Ohio. A .30/30 will kill anything you'll hunt in TN. However, so will a .45/70, and then you'd be prepared for that trip you mentioned for bear/bison out west.

My first gun was a 336 30-30, my dad had a marlin 35 and a 444. I really enjoyed the 30-30 amd 35, I've been looking at the 45-70 but I'm worried the recoil will kill my already bad shoulders (torn rotator cuff and bursitis). I want to go out west for bison, moose, or elk, maybe even a bear. So that's why I'm wanting a 45-70, most of my hunting will be here in Tennessee though.
If it's a 45-70 you're really interested in, get one. You could get into reloading and work up some TN deer loads that are shoulder forgiving and some effective bison loads.

Welcome to Marlin owners from NE Indiana.
I am Steve and I have a Marlin problem.😁
I started with a 94 44mag to meet Indiana's pistol caliber deer rifle requirements. Then I spotted a 1894 in 25-20. Well Dad had a Win 92 in that caliber so why not? A friend had a 39a and it was a squirrel killing machine. So I started looking and found one. Then came a 336 in 30-30. Then a d&t waffle top in my birth year, popped up in the 35rem. Birth year and 35rem which I can shorten to make state land requirements done deal. Then Gander Outdoors ran an add for 1895 45-70 for $500. Add another one to the safe.
If I were you I would look for a 336A or 336SC in 35 rem. Not much more kick than a 30-30 with a little more punch.
Or just go big early and get the 45-70
