This is a new design I'm having Accurate do for my Marlin 1894S

This bullet has a long nose, with short shank to fit the .44-40 neck, a .28 meplat and blunt, rounded ogive for slick feeding in the Marlin.

Overall cartridge length in .44-40 brass will be too long for Colt revolvers or older rifles, at 1.67," or 1.63" in .44 Magnum brass, but it will feed fine in the 1894S and fit fine in the longer cylinders of Ruger revolvers.

Profile follows the existing 36-155D and 45-245D bullets which are the same profile and overall length, simply adjusting diameter to caliber. Small grease grooves are adequate with smokeless loads, with crimp groove and slight bevel-base which aids bullet insertion. Latest edition at right is the 31-114D, newly added to the catalog, intended for the .32 S&W Long and .32 H&R Magnum, or as a small game bullet for subsonic "Cat Sneeze" loads with 4 grains of Bullseye in .30 or .303 caliber hunting rifles.

Range report 10 Sept 2014

43-225D, wheelweights, Lee Liquid Alox, sized .430, Starline brass, Remington 2-1/2 LP primer, Little Dandy Rotor #20 nominal 8.3 grains (old Hercules 1960s) Red Dot. Marlin 1894S Microgroove, 36" twist, IRON SIGHTS.

2014-09-10_16-51-16_781.jpg

Firing with iron sights off improvised rest through the chronograph, ten shots at 100 yards 6" vertical 4" horizontal. The vertical is me. Bead appears larger than bull. Basically it hits where ever the bead is at 100 yards. I've Loctited the XS ghost ring sight down. I consider this good performance. Have more loaded for serious group shooting later to compare with 43-200Q side by side on same day. Stay tuned.

Looks like 1,317 is a good speed to look for. We know thats what your Marlin pushes it at 100 yards!!
The 1317 is instrumental at 15 ft. Not sure what the Remaining Velocity would be at 100 yds.., but probably less than 1200, so we are looking at shape effect upon crush, not expansion.

To shoot your gel expect 7 grs. Of Bullseye or 8 grs. of Unique would be close to 1200 rifle or 900 revolver Or 17 grs. of #2400 or 20 grs. of 4227.

I'll gett'em tested!!!!

BTW, any input on how to make my tests better...let me know. I am getting lazy and simply to the point!

Exactly what I would expect at revolver velocity. Would be nice to know at what rifle velocity it begins to rivet or expand. My guess is that it will need 1200+ fps to reduce penetration below 30". Maybe try to get a fresh beef shoulder blade or use a piece of heavy leather and 3/8" plywood against the block.

Basically did the same thing today. This time I sized and lubed to .430, used the Cowboy deprime/resize die, then the Lyman 310 .429 expander plug but only just past the mouth, then the cowboy roll crimp.

Bullet to the far left has been roll crimped, next...just seated and the rest finger started.

This is perfectly capable to get 1" groups at 50' with my revolver. The problem is my aim.
