Hello everyone, I just ordered a new 1895m on friday. I had been looking for quite a while for a 1895g but had a tough time finding one here in Alberta Canada. When I would find one it was outrageously priced compared to a new one. Then Cabelas sent out a flyer with a sale on the 450 for $569.00cdn.
I know this no screaming deal compared to US sales, but thats what we have. Now that I have ordered it I found this website and hear all kinds of different things about new Marlins and the the end of 450 production.
When I receive my new rifle can any one tell me what problems to look out for with my new purchase? I'm not a gun smith but I am not stupid either or maybe I am!!!!
Is this caliber going to be sticking around or will I have to become a handloading guru? I don't have a problem with reloading if I need to do it, but for the most part factory ammo has always suited me just fine.
Thanks for any info given.

Chopaz, welcome to Marlin Owners from central Florida! Great purchase and I'm sure you can't wait to get your hands on it. I too bought one this last week and can't wait to get it. You will find that the members of this site are extremely helpful and willing to share info anytime.

Regards,

1895gunner

P.S, nice deer in your avatar pic!

Thank you. That is my first buck which I shot last november. If all goes well and the creek don't rise I will try to repeat my hunt this year and maybe add a moose to it.

There is a good chance. Do you plan on any mods or leave it as is?

She'll look just like my other Guide Guns when I get done. Not too much, just a Bushnell 1.5x4 and a Marlin leather sling. I have custom leather hang tags on each of my rifles cases depicting what's inside. Lever from LeverGunLeather.com made them for me.

1895M = "Elephant"
1895G = "Grizzly"
444P = "Buffalo"
1894P = "Deer"
336D ="Hog"
1894CP = "Raccoon"
783 = "Coyote"
39A = "Rabbit"
99C = "Squirrel"

It looks very nice. I am going to try out the factory sights and if I don't like them I will probably get a williams set up, along with a leather sling. I might redo the stock if its not comfortable but those are all things down the road first I need to receive it and then go shoot.

My factory sights were dead on at 150.
If it ain't broke.....don't fix it.

Chopaz.......You got the right rifle if you dont plan to reload.In factory ammo the 450 is bit more of a stopper than "standard" 45-70 ammo.Stouter fodder is available for the 45-70 but it is PRICEY.I took a pretty good Alaskan Blackie with my 450.One well placed shot and .....a lurch forward and roll over.Not even a moan.Enjoy your rifle......I only wish I lived where there were mosse available!

Thanks for the info, but I was disapointed today as I did not receive my rifle as promised. I will probably have to wait till monday now.
DVHEL I can tell you that we are very furtunate to live where big game is easily attained. My father and I had a good hunt last fall with a young bull moose, 11 point and a 12 point whitetail in a mater of three days. All this is 4 hours away and there alot of big bucks much bigger than my 12 point.
Tin Star my plan is to shoot and see if I am comfortable with its factory set up and only then will I make a decition on changes, i hope that I can be dead like yours but time tell.
As for factory ammo I have only found 2 rounds available here leverlution at $34.00 per 20 rounds and hornandy 350g fp at $34.00 per 20 and its backordered. So I only have the leverlution to shoot with. With all the new gun laws (which suck) even though Canadian law allows us to buy ammo from the US most US supliers will no longer deal with Canadians as they feel its too much as a hassle, even brass and bullets.
We can no longer buy blackpowder for our flint locks so we have to experiment with alternitves. In alot ways I wish I was in the US and not be so restricted on what I can and canot buy. Thats about All I will rant about for now!!!!

Sorry to hear of the trouble you're having finding ammo. It's a rough trade off, like you said, you have access to large game. Good luck with your gun. Monday is only a couple of days away. I feel your pain though, I'm waiting on a new gun also.

Well got my guide gun today but no ammo. I phoned cabelas and they said it is on backorder, but its funny how it was instock when I bought it and they still proceeded to charge me the dangerous goods surcharge for the ammo. Hopefully they will get it sorted.
As for my rifle it seems to be all there the wood seems to be pited or pourus I don't really know how to describe it. To put it another way its not very smooth almost like it was 90% finished. Down the roadI will probably redo my stock but right now I want to go and shoot the darn thing (need ammo) I guess I will go on a search for some high priced ammo locally.

Found some hornandy 350g FN at $41.00can. per 20 so I guess I will buy 2 boxes tommorow. This all I can find and no else has any except one guy wanted to sell me 450 bushmaster (WHAT) which I said not the same animal.

chopaz, I received my rifle on Friday last week and found myself in your same predicament (no ammo). The only difference between us is that I can't go shoot mine right now so I wasn't in any hurry. I did order some 350gr interlocks that will be in this week. Good luck shooting yours and I would be interested in some close-up pictures of your stock.
