found a 39a ,it's older has the circle on right side of barrel, did not see a jm in it. it DOES NOT have a serial # anywhere, behind hammer, under lever,,. only found the # 17 stamped inside when it was taken apart.. it is case colored... any help here.. guy wanted 600 for it but I do t know enough about it with no serial...

If it is indeed a 39A and if it is case hardened (colored) it has to be manufactured in either 1939 or 1940/41. If it was made in 1939 there is no alpha character prefix in the S/N but the S/N should be stamped on the lower tang. If it was made in 1940/41 it should have a "B" prefix and should be stamped on the lower tang. Marlin didn't make any 39A's from 1942-44. Beginning in 1945 they began production again but the receivers were blued. Regarding the one you have--look at the buttstock, if it is the older "S" shape (like the model 39) it is a 1939. If it is the pistol grip style it is a 1940/41. With the #17 on the inside, it may be a 1939 model and maybe the S/N stamp has worn off the tang. Almost anything is possible. Post some pictures, there's lots of knowledgeable folks here that will help identify it for you.
