HI GUYS, I AM NEW TO THIS FORUM AND SO FAR I AM LIKE A KID IN A CANDY STORE ON HERE. LOVE THIS SITE !!
I HAVE A MARLIN 1895 COWBOY IN 45-70.
I HAVE A WHOLE BUNCH OF IMR3031, IMR4895. THESE TWO PROPELLANTS DON'T SEEM TO WORK VERY WELL IN ANY OF MY OTHER RIFLES, SO I THOUGHT I WOULD LET MY
45-70 DIGEST IT FOR PLINKING.
I WILL BE SHOOTING 300GR REM HOLLOW POINTS AND 405 GRAIN REM SOFT POINTS BECAUSE THEY ARE CHEAP AND I CAN BUY IN BULK.
I AM HAVING A MORE DIFFICULT TIME FINDING INFO ABOUT IMR 4895 THAN IMR 3031, BUT ANY INFO YOU COULD SUGEST WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.
DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS ABOUT THE 45-70 BUT IT SURE IS FUN TO SHOOT.

Both of the powders mentioned are better suited for full power loads and bullets heavier than 300 grains. With 300 grain bullets 3031 using from 51 grains gives 1661fps and max listed load of 56 grains gives a listed 1991 fps. Imr4895 is slower than 3031 so with a 405 grain bullet 50 grains gives approx1644 fps and 53 grains gives 1742 fps. I have tested the loading data for 3031 and the 300 Rem HP and found it to leave a lot of powder residue but makes accurate loads. I loaded 53 grains of 3031 under the 405 Rem bullet and got fine accuracy along with noticable recoil. My rifle is a Marlin 1895 standard rifle.

Some of these guys "plink" at skunks and other vermin with full charge Garrett cape buff loads... I sorta suspect there's a few recoil lovers here, with .45-70 and .450 Marlins... Guy
