In search of load data for the following:

Gun: H&R Handi Rifle 45-70

Bullet: 400 grain speer (.458 JSP)

Powder (on hand): IMR3031

Velocity: 1400fps (ish)

Use: Whitetail Deer

Range (Max) 150yrd

I have found data for a 400gr Lead bullet, 300 gr JHP bullet.... Just nothing for 400gr Speer JSP /

Note: I have a load for the 300gr JHP, over H4198, but a reduced load of H4198 is not accurate from my gun... I have been told I bought the wrong powder.... If I cannot use the IMR3031 for the 400gr 45-70, then I will use it for something else

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks for looking

I don't know where your action falls strength wise and there were no trap door loads for that part so PLEASE BE SURE before testing!

EDIT: I stand corrected:
Trap-Door Actions:
Speer Part #2479
COAL Tested: 2.540"
IMR 3031 Start Grains: 45.0
Velocity: ~1389
DO NOT EXCEED GRAINS: 49.0

cthulhufan,

Thanks for the reply..... The handi rifle is supposed to be between trapdoor and midrange lever strength... I keep things moderate, no hodrod loads... I run my 300 gr JHP at 1850- 1900 fps... (factory ammo velocity) the action is good to go no signs of pressure issues...

as for the 400gr with imr 3031... I figured there was some data out there..... I dont have a speer manual, so I had to ask...
Not sure of the pressure the 400 gr with 3031 will be, but suspect if I keep at max trapdoor level I should be ok..

My Hodgdon and an old lyman (i barrowed) shows a 405 cast with 3031 for trapdoor, max load at 48.5 gr @1700fps (ish)..

I load wit the same bullet for my 1895 and 53 gr of 3031 are a very accurate load. I am not sure about the strength of your rifle so start in tthe 49 area and work your way up to pressure signs. I have seen no signs of abnormal pressures with the elmer keith load in my 1895

I don't hotrod either, actually I usually find accuracy in my loads on the lower end of the scale for a given load. Have fun and I hope it works well for you! :tee:

cthulhufan: I agree. Accuracy is definitely the way to go... Some fine tuned ammo to the gun over speed anyday!

mrguvna... I have tried the H4198 at 50 grain inmy handi rifle... lets just say it IS NOT handi! LOL settle on 47 gr H4198 with 300 gr JHP...

I have two Handi .45-70s. The SB2 frame strength is way above trap door and mid range lever gun loads. I get the best results with IMR 4198 pushing a 405 gr. Remington at close to 2000 fps in my 22 inch Handi. I also use 4198 with 300 and 350 gr. bullets at greater velocity and flatter trajectory in a 16.5 inch Handi. The .45-70 Handi is an easy 4-500 yard rifle. BUT, it ain't point blank and ya gotta learn the rainbow....that's where the fun lies.

speer #13 (for weak trapdoor actions):

400Speer Flat-SP IMR-3031 49.0 gr 1,584fps Remarks: maximum load, use maximum loads with caution
400Speer Flat-SP IMR-3031 45.0 gr 1,389fps Remarks: starting load

max. case length: 2.105"; trim-to length: 2.095"; Load data: case: W-W; primers: CCI 200; barrel length: 26"; twist: 1-20

Looks like the same load data as Speer #14 posted above is in this here from Speer #13
