I am originally from NC, moved away in 2003. They do require a permit to purchase unless you have a concealed carry and that will allow you to purchase. There is not a permit to carry, but concealed carry as in other states. I understand from friends that the Wake County (Raleigh, NC Area) Sheriff is liberal, like many other large communities & cities in historically conservative states. It is sad to see this play out in many communities.

I am surprised how liberal NC is co pared to the other southern states around them. They are even more liberal than Florida so far although South Florida is trying to change us. They are made up of NE transplants and refugees from other socialist countries and then vote for the same stuff they fled. Hard to believe how stupid they are.

Not taking applications for new licenses should probably be the least of concerns during times when a quarantine, state of emergency or disaster has been declared by a local or federal government.

If you think not being able to get a license is bad you should look into what they can take away from you or do to you during a declared emergency.
doubloon,

Any new CC permits would only provide a clear path on where to go for confiscation if so ordered.

You need a Sheriff's permit to purchase a handgun? Do you need a permit to buy a car? A TV set? A blender or food processor? Why single out a specific consumer item? That is a blatantly un-Constitutional law. Lawyers need to get on this one. It could never stand up in Court.

Well stated. Although not in my particular area, we sure have that same problem here in Virginia.

It seems like you are almost "forced" to get a Conceal Carry there, during normal times anyway. I believe most of our NC members on here already have one, therefore are not affected by it, but how about those who don't have one? This is something I never knew, for being my neighboring state anyway. Wonder how long this has been implemented?

Most of my friends/family have their CC. The first handgun I ever purchased was in 1984 and I had to go to the Sheriff’s department and get a permit. I got two at the same time, if my memory is correct they were $5 each. Years later when the CC came to be they were allowed to purchase without a handgun purchase permit. When I moved away from NC I was surprised how simple it was to legally purchase a handgun. The entire process feels antiquated and controlling. In general NC seems to hold to traditions and change very slowly. It’s a great state but as I have moved around the country there are many great states.

UPDATE - Judge Orders Sheriff to resume Issuing Permits:

AP story via Washington Times said:
A North Carolina sheriff’s office must resume accepting and processing pistol purchase permits within a week, a judge ruled on Tuesday.

Superior Court Judge A. Graham Shirley issued the order, and said Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker must also modify the application process to minimize the number of people in the justice center, WNCN reported.Baker temporarily suspended accepting new pistol purchasing permits on March 24. That was two weeks after Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency in North Carolina and 11 days after President Donald Trump declared the COVID-19 pandemic a national emergency.

"The RIGHT to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"

How is it that a regulation or a LAW to buy a gun in any of the given states was not challenged in Court?

Give them the finger, they take the hand. I don't care if a Sheriff is a Liberal, he does NOT have a Right to ignore the 2nd Amendment. :musicus:

I moved to NC in the mid 80ties. The permit system was that you needed someone to vouch for you in order to get a permit to buy. That person also had to live in the county. You could get as many permits as you wanted to pay for. I believe this was a Jim Crow law that is still on the books.

Also, at the time, LEOs were not allowed to carry off duty without the permission of the Chief LEO, and then only in their jurisdiction. I heard open carry was legal, but never saw anyone doing it. No CCW license was available for civilians.
