I just wanted to post a pic of my South Dakota antelope that I shot with my 308ME. I love this cartridge and have used it for everything I can here in Iowa, coyotes, the antelope, and a couple late season does. Anyway, the shot was at 293 lasered yards off the top of a fence post. Not the biggest, but a wonderful heartshape to him. Wyoming this year with a 1894P. Look out goats.

The 308MX has definately expanded my range. I did shoot a Mulie in South Dakota with XLR in 30-30 with LE ammo a few years back, but I could have done that hunt with open sights and a 357. Not very big deer either. Can't wait for fall again.

We don't have anything like that in Iowa either, so I try to make a little pilgramage out west every year. Can't always afford, but I try. The guy that I shot the goat with is affordable for a fully guided hunt, and its all private with lots of animals, and he's a nice guy.

The sheep is another story altogether. I've got some points in Wyoming, but it may take several more years to draw, and there may be none left due to them stinking wolves.

Anyway, you need to go sometime. I have no regrets, even though I gave up soda and eating out at work for 6 months to afford the trip.

Nice looking horns on that Goat. Born and raised on a farm in Iowa, when did they start letting you use a rifle for hunting? Used to be shotgun only when I was a pup. Guess that's been 40 years ago. :-\ DP

I know those goats can run like the wind but I didn't think those goats could balance that well. You shot it off the top of a fence post? Wow. ;) :)

Great shooting and nice mount by the way!!!! I own a .308MX and just love it!! Some day maybe I will get the chance to wring it out at distance.

Don't be silly Dave ::)
Everyone knows sargemarlin was balanced on top of the fence post for the shot. What I want to know is was he balancing on 1 foot or both ???

Seriously I'd take that goat any day! That 308MX will make you look good every-time.

Well, I'm not that good. It was two feet, but I was standing on the barbed wire and shot off a steel fence post, so that adds to the difficulty. ;)

The answer to the using rifles in Iowa is a sllightly complicated one. A couple years back, maybe 4, IDNR decided to try to control population some and introduced a centerfire rifle season on the lower two tiers of counties across the state. The areas for the most part are fairly sparsely populated, so not too much concern. It is, however, monster buck country and there were concerns that big bucks would get shot. There have definately been some shed antler bucks killed, but no monsters poached that I am aware of. It does add some interest for those of us that like to stretch the season out some and put extra meat in the freezer. They have sold fast the last couple years for sure.

Thanks for all the compliments too fellas. I have on antelope bigger, but that was with a bolt gun, so it doesn't count.

I would say that's a good goat in anyone's book. Very nice :). And with a lever rifle, you just can't beat that ;D.

Well ah got took to da woodshed on that one!!! ;) BUT it is gratifying to know there are folks here who are better smart arses than me. They were all good but that standing on the barbed wire comment nearly floored me. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Looks like Sarge is fittin right in. 8)

Nice looking mount. In the fall of 2009 I shot a nice antelope, not huge but nice, with my 308 MXLR at 237 yards out in central WY. Through the heart and it took a couple of steps and over it went. I will be going back to WY this fall for another antelope hunt. I will take along the 308 but I will be trying out my 338 MX to see how it does. I also got a nice mule deer buck last fall in WY with 45/70 XLR at 190 yards. Marlins are just plain fun to shoot and hunt with. Once again that is a great looking mount and a great shot too.

Seebea74, I'm headed out to Wyoming too this fall. Using an outfitter who is in the south central area of the state, never hunted with him before. He was relatively inexpensive considering. I have a cousin who could help me with elk and mule deer in the Cody area, but not so much with antelope. Plus, I am short on vacation time, so I'm cheating using the outfitter.

My shot with the 308MX was also a bang flop deal, quartering to, through the brisket on the right front and out the offside ribs. The 237 and 190 are good pokes too and I'm anxious to hear how the 338 does this fall. I'm tempted to bring along the 1894P and shoot it rather than the 308, but I know once I get there and see how wide open it is, it will probably go back in the case. We'll see.

Good luck with your hunt.

I have hunted area 42 In south eastern Wyoming about 60 miles north of Laramie 5 times in the last ten years on a private ranch but there is alot of state land around and I shot one of my biggest buck on state land. they were all shot with bolt guns before I got marlinitus but my longest shot was 178 yds so I know the 308 ME is more than enough muscle for the task! I plane on going back next year to do just that. Dennis

Area 42 is the area I put in for. I haven't actually heard if I drew yet, but should as I had some points. The outfitter did say that they shot a couple of "booners" off the ranch I'm going to be on last fall. I'd like to hold out for a whopper, but knowing me, I won't, especially if I take the 94P. No matter, I'm already looking forward to the trip for sure.
