I have a Model 40 that has developed problems loading the shells in to the receiver. I don't know a lot about guns so bear with me.
It fired and loaded fine a few months ago but when I dug it out again to go shooting it wouldn't pop the shell to cock it. The springs seem good and I cleaned it up but the problem persists.I'm using the same brand ammo I used before when it shot fine.

I was wondering if anyone here had some suggestions to help me out.I'm reluctant to bring this $60 gun in to a gunsmith who might put me through the ringer for a possible cheap fix.

Not familiar with the Marlin M40 but if it is magazine tube fed the spring/follower may be hanging up. A quick cleaning job may fix the problem and also check for a dented mag tube.
