well I needed to add a lever gun to my collection and was in a gun shop and saw this for $175 and grabbed it. Got it home took apart cleaned it up. Took the stock and forearm off and sanded off the finish and am on my 2nd of 5 coats of true oi; I am going to put on it. One thing I noticed is how light this rifle is. The stock is pretty thick and am thinking about drilling it out from the rear and adding some steel shot and replacing the old recoil pad with a new one. Has anyone tried this or any other method to add a little weight.
yes, don't know why you want to add weight... mine came with a Williams peep and it's I think my best shooter as is. Finish that tru oil and go shoot and see what you think. BYW I just came in from a Gun Show and found a like new 1950 336 SC 30-30 for get this... $325. He thought is was a '70s model. Only thing wrong with it is the bulls eye is missing. Waffle top, unblemished. Matches my 1951 SC 35 cal I just traded for. Can't wait to go shoot it. Enjoy your 30TK. I think I paid $420 for mine sight-un-seen.
You got yourself a good little rifle there! You'll find the TK is very accurate and easy to handle. Adding weight ...Why? That rifle weighs in about 6.25 -6.50 lbs should be able to carry that baby all day and barely notice it.
Congrats on getting it. Mr fixit
If you haven't gathered what these other folks are saying, DON'T ADD ANY WEIGHT.
???
The 30TK is perfect in its original form. Don't screw with perfection. I've had my 30TK for a couple years, and I'm not ashamed to say that I paid $299 for it. I would have paid even more. When I hear of you adding steel weights and a different recoil pad, I can literally hear my 30TK cringing in the safe. Don't do it.
well no extra weight will be added after. I do have to put a new pad on it as the one on there was a little dry rotted. When i took the srews out to refinish it i could tell how brittle the pad was. I was amaised when I saw some of the prices people have paid for them. The guy at the gun shop was not sure even what tk stood for. I traded him a rossi single shot 22-250 I got new for $75 and he gave me & $150.00 for it. After backround check I walked out with the gun for 40 bucks out of pocket. I love deals
Yes the recoil pad is a Pachmayr, the stock was a pistol grip bought from Leverdude some time ago, I had it on the 336W and added the butt pad at that time. One day I had a brain fart and had at the stock/forearm and transformed it into what you see. As you may have guessed..I'm happy with a one of a kind TK. ;D Mr fixit
TK-Texan Kmart, yes, who would have thunk that grown men would have been clamoring for a Kmart named rifle!! Mine's like new cept for a scratch on the bottom of the stock. When I get up the nerve I'm refinishing it with tru-oil. Someone on here did theirs with a red mahogony stain and turned out really good. Or I may go for the natural light birch with tru-oil as I like that too if I can get all the stain out of it.
I have one, too. Handy little rifle, but I still think they look like something done up for some banana republic's mounted constabulary.
Should have a sling ring on the receiver...
