Yes, it's good shooting! I never tried 2K offhand. That is pretty danged cool.
But, let's be real here. Would you rather our military snipers were using 45-70 lever actions? Or the current 338's & 300's they're using to take those 1,000+ yard shots?
Just trying to inject a little reality here. I've shot 1,000 with a 308, it's not easy to do well. And 1500+ with a doggone 50 BMG.
I do think that this shows us though, that a group, say 40 or 50 men, with 45-70's might have been pretty effective against an area target at 1,000 - 2,000 yards... Say a group of enemy... Ya, I suspect that a bunch of opponents would have been hit with some 45-70 rounds.
And, this looks like an awful lot of fun to be sure!

I live in the brush country of the NE US. Any shot over 200 yards may not be very smart. If its one thing I learned from the Game Commission training is know your back drop. Where will your shot hit if you miss or it goes right through what you're aiming at. At my age and where I live, I'm comfortable at about 275 yards. I use a 308 Winchester with Nosler Varmageddon 110 grain ammo. Any further away, I don't shoot. :rofl:

I remember the first time I stepped on the Palma line at 1,000 yards. I was convinced there was no way I could find the middle of a 46" bull !
But with enough practice you can do it. We shot prone, don't think we would hit well offhand.
One Saturday, we had a "beer" match, at 600, with whatever iron sighted SPORTING rifle you wanted to bring. I showed up with my .303 SMLE sporter, and it was doing well until my extractor quit on me. Was a load of fun.

Ya, that bug-bitten fellow with the 45-70 Marlin sure did well. Dang.
Mike Britton - yup - the bull at 600, 800, 900 and 1,000 yards looks awfully small. I can't shoot prone anymore due to neck issues. Maybe I'll grab my Marlin, stand on my hind legs like that fellow and give it a go! Ha... Nope.
He did pretty well though. Got some good spotting. I liked that, "One target right and two targets high" that would be useful.
Nearly 2,000 yards with a doggone Guide Gun... Amazing.

The problem is they could see the black powder smoke, finish their cigarettes and get under cover before impact.
To shoot at that range your loads would have about perfect. They did hold long range matches back then. Mostly they had custom rifles, not Trapdoors. You can find accounts of them and news papers had write ups on the matches.

I got down on the floor not too long ago with my pogo stick and found 2 things in my way. The belly I've grown since I was shooting and a neck that won't let me lay prone for very long......

The rear sight he's using, I'm looking for one like it. That actually brings me to another question. I have a 2001 JM .45.70 with an octagonal barrel. I also have a Lyman #2 tang sight for it. I would have to drill and tap the tang for a mounting screw. I'm capable of doing the drill work. My question is, how much would I harm, if any, the value of the gun? One LGS tells me he would pay more for it, another says he would devalue it because it wasn't in factory condition, being altered.
