This is a new one for me never hearing of it before. Since you have a '79' 783, are there any glaring differences between the two ? Could it be the last upgrade before issuing the 883 ? Any difference in accuracy between it and your 783 using the same ammo ? My Google search turned up only one example with a couple of photos; sure looks identical to my 783. Being extremely rare for all the mass produced Marlins, you've got a collector piece for sure.

Maybe a mis-stamped 783. Bad strike or worn stamping die left the lower part of the "8" incomplete, making it appear to be a "9"

Well Eric, which is it, one of a kind or mis-stamp ?

Gotta be a 783 as Marlin didn't make a 793. they went from the 80, 81, 780, 880 of course that includes the 781,782, 783, 881, 882 & 883. But no 793
