Has Marlin, or now Remington, discontinued the 338? The reason I ask is because I saw one on Gunbroker for a price of $998 and it states that this gun will soon be a collectors item. They are still in the stores, where you can find them, for around $549. Is this just someone trying to get a premium price for his gun or is the 338 gone?

I am pretty sure that is just one unscrew-pullous greedy individual using scare tactics to run up the prices of his auctions.

That's what I thought. I want to get a 338MX and I am saving my money so I was concerned they were going to stop making them before I could get up the money. I am sure there are some good used ones out there and that is what I would prefer.

At that price he probably won't. I would think that most people would do a little research before laying out that kind of money. The think that makes me mad is that he really thinks people are dumb enough to pay double the price for one of his guns. Maybe he is gun stupid or just misguided. ???

I agree with that. If GB would do something like that then it would lend to the credibility of the site.

Gunbroker is never gonna slap somebodies wrist for charging too much. They make their money on final value fees. They are hoping that guy sells his rifle for $1000.00. Hell, they're hoping everyone gets twice what their guns are worth.

Says something about GB then doesn't it....somebody from there ought to say "C'mon dude get real" it makes them look bad too for allowing them to be the tool to screw people (pardon my french)

What was that commercial for a men's clothing store..."An educated consumer is our best customer".

People need to do their homework, because a lot of these gun dealers are not looking out for you, they're just looking for a quick buck.

Didn't see the ad, perhaps the gun is a North Haven and the seller is trying to add on some value.
I was thinking the same. Maybe it's one of the first production every. When the 338ME just hit the streets I call a gun pusher I know and ask if he had a 338XLR. He said that he just sold a 338MX for $9XX.00. So if his selling point is that it's made by Marlin of NH. CT. is the last of the good days and therefor a collectible. Well let the buyer beware.

The 338 has had a very odd rollout. For the longest time, it was in big demand, but if you could get guns, you could not get ammo and vice versa. Right now, it appears that you can get both. Since 99% of us only shoot deer/paper, I am not sure that we need it, but that is not stopping most buyers.

I've had mine for a little more than a day and even though i've not fired it yet can tell you than unless it sprays bullets like a shotgun sprays pellets...its going to be very hard to ever pry it out of my hands

The 338 is a good hunter/paper cartridge can hunt anything in north America and easy on the shoulders at the range. Plenty of powerful without being over whelming. If I only could have only one rifle and my choice was a lever action tube mag. it would be a 338ME.
