Howdy all,

I just purchased a Marlin 336W that looks to be in excellent condition. The serial number starts with 'M', so should have been built in 1955. However, the rifle has a push button safety. I thought Marlin started putting those in during the 1980s. Also, the barrel is micro-groove. Would 1955 be right for a micro-groove - I thought perhaps they started for the 336 in 1956. Any ideas?

The Marlin rifles made by remington over the last several months have an "m" prefix.
I Don't think the safety came along until 1983 but I'm no expert.

Remlin serial numbers begin with the prefix "MR"; and Remlin Marlins have the serial number stamped on the left side of the frame. If your gun fits these two parameters, then a Remlin era Marlin is what you have. If your gun does not fit into these parameters, then post of pics and we'll tell you what has been cobbled together to create what it is you have.

Thanks for the replies! Yes indeed, the serial # is like 'MR______' and on the left side. Mystery solved.

This is my first lever action and .30-30. Really looking forward to using it.
