Marlin 1895GBL

I got a new 1895GBL coming soon and I'm not sure what would be best, scope rings that mount right on the reciever or mount a base on it and then buy adjustable rings? My biggest worry is the power of the 45/70 I need something that will handle the kick. Also I would prefer see-thru rings!

See-through rings don't have the best support here. There's lots of reasons why, but if they're right for you - get some.

Most would tell you to get the lowest rings you can find to keep the scope closest to the bore for maximum accuracy.

I use a scout scope and ghost rings on my GBL. Quick release low rings work well in this situation. I selected Leupold, they are high quality.
Putting aesthetic reasons aside for a moment, mounting the scope high enough for see through rings doesn't work well for lever action due to the drop angle of the rear stock you would need to hold your head up considerably more to see through the scope, not allowing a decent cheek rest. Now for the aesthetics of it, they just don't look good on a levergun. Of course, like Snapping Twig suggested, if it is what you want, get some.. As for the poll, a third option might have gotten a lot more to participate, that being "are see thru rings just a bad idea on a levergun?"
And by the way, welcome to our opinionated group! ;D
Alright so I'm thinkin the see-thru rings are out of the question. I need comfort when making an accurate shot and accuracy is obviously what I'm looking for here. Is there any chance I could see a pic of your GBL snapping twig? Also does anyone know of any flip scope mounts?
I've got Leupold QRW on all of my rifles / carbines that got a picatinny / weaver rail. It works best for me. The Marlin is included in this line-up. Mine is a blued .45-70 Guide Gun with an XS lever rail.

I've tried see-thru mounts as well, didn't like them.

Welcome to the club !

Nove Scotia eh? Got a great friend in Lunenberg which I visited last July. He posts a lot on New Bear East Adventures forum (Tuketu). Only problem is that he likes to fling sticks over bait from a tree stand instead of a hardy Marlin. He & his wife are really good people as is the Knot Pub in Lunenberg!!!!!

Also met another hunter over across the Annapolis Valley. Never experienced better hospiltality. They both got me wanting to be a Newfie eh?

I have a cheap Simmons red dot tube scope on my 45-70 Guide Gun. Popped a treed bear w/it in Northern California a few years ago. It wasn't parallex corrected so I had to really be careful that the red dot was centered in the scope (word to the wise). Also got my "best" bear (see avatar) in 2008 w/a 22" bbl 1895 450/with Leupold 4X at 30 paces (which is just a 45-70 U can hot load for your 1895). Ever want some bear smoking or crock pot recipes-let me know!!!

Wish U many years of successful times afield w/gun in hand my friend. Go'in to Quesnel, BC next June for a "trophy" black bear. Wish me luck!!!!!! Bruce aka Sgt Sideswipe, Western, Washington.

Hi,
I use a Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20mm, with Leupold QRW quick release weaver/picatinny rings and a EGW picatinny/weaver rail base. I like the EGW and quick release rings because when you remove the rings and scope I am still able to use the original sights. This is on a GBL 1895.
Yah, Nova Scotia man were all easy going as they come! hahaand I'm actually from the annapolis valley funny eh!

Does anyone know if you are able to use your iron sights with the leupold QRW mounts? Or know of anyone who would ship the XS lever rail to canada? I can't find anyone that does. And snapping twig, that GBL looks sick! I can't wait to hold mine;D
Snapping Twig: Mighty nice outfit there. Was never interested in the big loop lever until my eyes were opened last Dec Whitetail hunt'in in the snow w/mittens. Had to take the leather gloves off & just wear the wool liners when using my 336 in 35 Rem. Now I finally understand why big loop levers were made! (duh).
Hi Nova,
If you look one up on your last post you will see I use those QRW rings.

I also agree with Snapping's advice. I currently use a Burris red dot sight mounted on a forward rail on my GBL, but I have the same Leupold Scout Scope and low QD rings that I use on a M1A. The scope would be easy to move to my GBL.
Hey moofy, is there anyway you could put a pic of your GBL on here I want to see how the EGW rail looks and fits on this rifle. Just wondering what the cost range would be for this set up?
Hi Nova,
I would love to but my camera was stolen during the floods here and is in the police exhibit room until the case comes up. I will try to borrow a camera and put it up for you. Give me a couple of days.
Graeme.
Well I am definitely in the minority here.......but I like the see thru rings!I have them on 2 of my Marlins.Despite what some say.....they are not THAT much higher than mounting bases and rings. If you want to use them..............USE THEM! However I do not have them on my big bore rifles. In fact....I have only one of the big rifles scoped. That would be my 1895MR that I took to Alaska. With good equipment, you could hunt all night if there was no overcast.I wanted the rifle scoped for that reason. My 45=70's have only beem in close range ,quick shot type hunting....so I prefer irons there.

Dave
I really digg the looks of that rifle you got there Twig!
Hi Nova,
just waiting for the camera. As for cost I live in Oz so the prices would not be indicative of US prices.
