I have recently purchased a 1881 in 32/40 & I am looking for a load
to use in this gun. I have several 1893's in 32/40 & I load them to
24.5 grains Hodgkins 4895 & 170 grain cast bullet with a gas check.
Due to the weaker action of the 1881 I need to reduce the load or
find a different formula. Thanks in advance!

I've always had excellent results with Accurate Arms's XMP 5744 for low pressure cast bullet loads. I don't shoot a .32-40, but a quick glance at my loading manuals shows a starting load of 18 grains. In your rifle, I would take that as a top load and go looking for best accuracy in the 16-18 grain range. H4198 has also worked well for me, if you have any of that around. Say about 17-19 grains of that.
