I have a Marlin model 39 with the serial number S1482. It was my dads gun, and i'd just like to know the date that the gun was manufactured. The barrel of the gun is in an octagon shape. If you have any ideas on what the date of manufacture could be, please post any information pertaining to this gun. Thanks.

If you will go to Forum and Scroll down to Library to a forum called Dates of Manufacture you can find the year your rifle was made. Tuck this tidbit away and you will always have it available to you for future reference.

Enjoy the Journey

Thanks for the quick reply but i think this gun is older than that i was born in 58 and dad had this gun before i was born. I"ve never seen another like it. It has a octagon barrel, it has a 4 digit serial number that is located under the lever. Where you load the shells you push a button in and slide the tube forward until it latches in the button. After putting shells in, you push the button and a spring brings the tube back to where it started. Behind the hammer it says Marlin MOD 39, and has a star stamped. 1506964_616242991774667_2136462622_n.jpg 29545_616243008441332_2093874001_n.jpg 1080437_616242448441388_358963880_n.jpg 1543182_616242435108056_797593948_n.jpg 1531591_616243025107997_1021014486_n.jpg

If you look at this site it will tell you a lot about the model 39 and even what the S stands for. It appears your gun was made sometime in the early 1920's. I have one that looks just about the same condition as yours and mine does not have the pre S stamped in the serial number. These are real neat rifles and the best thing of yours it has a story to go with it. Take care of it and pass it on to your family members.

Good luck.
