I am only repeating what I read. I don't have personal experience with the 45.
My 1894 and Super Blackhawk are 44 Mags, for the same reason, and each have provided one shot venison dinners.

I also read a lot of deer succumbed to the 44-40

I am going to carry on with the " why not 44 Magnum " question. Chuck Hawk, whoever he is, wrote the 45 Long Colt is not powerful enough for whitetail hunting, if that is your goal.
I’ve killed a doe at 105 yds and a 8pt at 30 yds with my 1894 45 colt. I know it’s at least powerful enough to flip a doe on her back at that range.

Chuck Hawks uses a formula that provides a numeric killing power value at 100 yds.
KP = Ft.Lbs at 100 yards * SD * Bullet area sq.in

Hawks concludes from practical experience that KP < 12.5 is for varmints under 50 lbs.

• 8.92 = 45 Colt, 225 gr, LeverEvolution
• 15.32 = 44 Mag, 225 gr, LeverEvolution
• 16.42 = 357 Mag, 158 gr, Buffalo Bore Heavy
• 29.60 = 30-30, 160 gr, LeverEvolution
• 51.39 = 30-06, 165 gr, Superperformance SST

The slow velocity of the 45 Colt at 100 yds is the cause of the low K.P.

I guess no one told the deer I have taken with a 45 Colt not to die! My 1894 Cowboy LTD is amazingly accurate and has never had a problem extracting rounds. I wonder where that information came from as I have never seen it with the many 1894's I've seen in use with 45 Colt round. I bet it was more internet facts.

That 225 gr leverevolution round is safe for use in a revolver. Safe in a Colt SAA. Those are not what I would be using in a Lever action Marlin 94 or a Winchester 92. The listed muzzle velocity on that ammunition from a 4.75" barrel is under 1,000 fps. There are better options for the 45Colt in a rifle.

My 45 colt is a Winchester I use 250 gr Hornady XTP loaded with 9 grains of Unique, I have made one shot kills on hogs deer and varmits and had no problems with extraction. It’s very accurate and fun to hunt with.

I finally got to the range yesterday to shoot my new Remlin 45lc 20" round barrel . Using my reloads, 255RNFP lead bullets over 8.5 grains of Unique. Nothing but great fun!
No hiccups at all. Only had 35 rounds with me, and boy did I run out quick! Can't wait to get a scope on it as these old eyes aren't what they need to be.
Hope yall all have a Great day!
