What was the longest shot- kill on an animal you've had with a 45/70? Rifle? Ammo load?

I'm not sure that this counts but my longest is 75 yards ( Whitetail, through the heart) with a cartridge case length cut to 1.625", 350 g. @ 1700 fps. I know its confusing but it's an Indiana state law thing.
I shot a Blacktail buck in the neck at 40yds, sorry if that doesn't sound far, but in Western Washington thick stuff that seems like a mile, :D :D :D :D That was with a 1895SS in 1993, the only thing I've killed with a 45-70, but that's about to change, ;)
Hey digger I hear you. I'm in SW Oregon. My only critter with 45-70 was last year, a blacktail deer. and it was the longest shot I have ever shot anything including muledeer. estimated range was about 75 yards. Most of all my shots are 15 to 35 yards-deer, elk, bear. Ranch dog 362 grn gc hit shoulder and exited just infront of the hind quaters. Thank god it was hig on the shoulder and barely clipped stomach pouch, and just below back strap. deer made one hop and disappeared in the brush. I walked up and found it laying where I last saw it.

Digger What kind of sled is that in your pic? I have an 18" Customweld.
It's a 19' North River. Great boat for the rivers and lakes around here. That pic is taken on Riffe Lake near Morton.
My longest shot with my GG was a broadside doe at 90yds shooting a Beartooth Bullets 325gr and using XS open sights. Shortest shot was 15yds on a 220lb 10 point with a Speer 300gr. The doe went another 90yds through the swamp and the buck fell about 40yds away. Also shot a 170lb boar at 30yds when I got down to go look for the doe. It was kinda dark and he said something kinda threatening.

My longest shot was a lasered 185 yds., to a feeder, while hog hunting in TX. I was using 300 gr. nosler patitions, and it was bang/flop, DRT. ;D

pic taken from tower blind. The feeder is that itty bitty spot, downrange.

and here she is DRT.

Some the critter that have fallen to my 45/70 guide gun. Everything was with a 350gr Hornady(RN and FN) on top of max doses of H322 unless otherwise posted

Racoon, 10 yards
Rabbit 10 yards

Some of the bears that come to mind,

Bear 20 yards
Bear 30 yards: 300gr Remington hp-2050fps
Bear 40 yards: 420gr JBY Crater -1750fps
Bear 50 yard
Bear 50 yards
Bear 150 yards

A truck load of deer, point blank to 126 yards. The 126 yard Buck was with a 300gr Remington hp (2050fps).

Bull Moose 200 Yards.

Longest game killed with the 45-70 was a Russian boar at just over 100 yds. He took a broadside shot and ran right towards me. Fired another shot and it literally rolled him. I was shooting the 325 Flex-Tip at about 1,800 ft/sec.

In the non-game catagory; I killed 3 out of 4 bowling pins at 300yds using the same load. Every one of them was DRT. ;D

Not exactly a Marlin but I was shooting the 45-70.

Hank, say more about the cartridge length for IN law, in regards to your 45-70. I thought I would be legal also here in IN. I'm not? I just sold my TC muzzleloader March 26th, and got a New Marlin 45-70.
About 80 yards, 400 grain RCBS from a guide gun and ghost ring sights, about 100 pound pig.
Bang-slap-drop... first shot from a guide gun, and a nice smile too!
Okay this wasn't my shot but my hand loads were being used. 4x4 whitetail buck at 321 yards, fell over dead. The bullet was a 535 grain Postell cast at 25 to 1.
So far my longest shot with my 45-70 was a pig at 95 meters, I don't like to stretch it out much. (about the same as I sighted it in with 350gr cast Ranchdog.)
My longest shoot with my GG was the first kill with that gun. It was a medium sized bull moose that was wounded by another guy (shot in the a$$ with a 6.5x55 Swedish mauser) and it came running past my stand at exactly 186 m = 203.412 yards according to my GPS.

It was with a Speer 400 gr bullet straight through the heart (lucky shot) with a red dot (OneV) sight. He jumped around for a couple of seconds and then he tipped over.

If he wasn´t wounded before I wouldn´t have taken that shot but when they are then it should be lead in the air untill they are dead.

It would be impolite to hijack this thread to another topic. Proper ediquette is to post a new topic. I and others would be glad to share ideas. By the way welcome to MO. It's a great place share thoughts, ideas and knowledge.

I got a nice 3X3 mule deer buck last fall in WY at 190 yards using Buffalo Bore 350 JFN ammo. I have a Leupold 3X9 LR scope so I held the dot below the cross hairs on the chest and squeezed the trigger. He went down like a ton of bricks. Love the rifle and the ammo.

I was waiting on Roy to chime in on this one! Your videos of long distance 45/70 shooting still impress me.

Personally 60yds is my longest shot with a 1895GS a few years back. In the deep woods that I hunt 150yds would be a very long shot... I like that.

What kind of gun and scope were you using and how far did you have to hold over?
