For you American gun owners who think your laws on gun ownership may be a bit harsh have a read of this and count yourself lucky you dont live back here in the aul sod.
At present we have to have a licence for each firearm. You have to show good reason for wanting it e.g deer hunting or target shooting etc. The application form has to have 2 references, 2 photos of you, permission to speak to your doctor and allow access to police to inspect your security which is on a sliding scale upwards depending on how many guns you have. The process can take two weeks or it could take over 12 months.
We can licence the following - shotguns, semi, pump action, sxs etc. rifles .22,.22 magnum,.17hmr bolt and semis, rifles including .243, 308 etc bolt and semi, although there are only approx 168 semis AR 15 type in the country. Pistols/revolvers .22, and center fire.Lever action pistol caliber rifles. We even have to have a licence for air rifles or pistols.
We had handguns here until 1972 when they had to be handed in for a month due to the troubles in Northern Ireland. The guns were held until 2004 and no compensation paid to their owners ( there are approx 13,000 hand guns in NI and they were there all through the troubles). We were allowed to re licence handguns in 2004 following a court case. There are approx 1,800 handguns, mostly.22 now licenced and no more center fire will be licenced. Anyway the cops dont want us to have handguns and are putting barriers in the way eg, rimfire revolvers can only hold 5 rds/ pistols can only have magazines of 5 rds.
We are not allowed to do Practical pistol/rifle/shotgun.
We are not allowed to reload.
Now the cops want to ban everything except Olympic style .22 handguns, even though no such thing exists. They are doing this because we as shooters have taken them to court over 600 times and won 93% of the time by getting refusals to licence overturned. They dont like being challenged.
They have proposals to ban almost everything based on concern for public safety and the fact that 1710 firearms were stolen between 2010 and 2014. They would not release the breakdown for a long time but recently have due to persistent requests in the Dail/parliament. Read this for a laugh remembering these are classed as firearms in the eyes of the the cops even though some are not in law.
I could go on and on but you would not believe me if I did. Here is the list - Try to keep a straight face and enjoy your freedom to own and shoot what you have.

Has this reduced crime?
At the moment they are only proposals. Gun ownership has risen and crime is falling. Taking our guns will make not one bit of difference to the crime figures. Criminals have access to AKs, H&Ks, handguns anything really that they want.
So no it has'nt and it wont.
I'm sure any of the British members here can tell you what happened to gun crime there when handguns and "assault rifles" were banned following kneejerk reactions to spree killings.

Hey Irishmarlin! Is it still the local Superintendent who issues the licences?

Oh we do enjoy our freedom and intend on keeping it that way... that's why we get so worked up when issues like that arise.
I'm pretty sure something important happened back in the late 1700s that we saw it coming... ;)

Yes that is our lib president, congress men and senators. We take NOT the BEST but the Worse of your health care and implement it here. My X lives in Wales, she left Manchester after having a hand gun pointed at her not once but twice. She also did not want her daughter being the victim of a Muslin rape gang, her best mate was dragged out of a car on Sept 11 and repeatedly raped because she would not get out her car and dance and celebrate when the twin towers fell in N.Y.! No arrests have been made even after she Ided the rapists. I am not bashing The U.K. or Erie I am saying beware! This will be our future if continue to ignore the problem of "Progressive socialism" and illegal immigration. Joel Lee

It has nothing to do with public safety or crime prevention.
It's all about CONTROL period.
Not even the UK politicians and bureaucrats are stupid & naive enough to think career criminals will ever apply for licenses and register their firearms.
This is what Obama wants for the United States and will get it unless American gun owners show a lot more solidarity and personal activism than they have to date.
Many are content to sit on their wallets and presume others will fight the good fight for them.
First and foremost is to stop voting democrat.

@EnglishBob The super issues nonrestricted licences eg 12g shotguns,.22 rifles, centrefire bolt action rifles. The Chief super issues restricted licences eg centre fire handguns, pistol cal rifles. It is a post code lottery really as there is no consistency in the system. One Super might issue a licence for a firearm and the Super in the next district wont. Typical Irish mess

A friend of a friend had that problem. The Superintendent who issued his license for his CF pistol, retired. The new guy renewed his licences for his shotguns and rifles no problem, but had a right old hullabaloo to have the license for the pistol renewd as the new Superintendent didn't "like" them....

We have a lot of stupid reasons to refuse licences here but the most common phrase from the cops is "Idontlikethelookofthat".
They also think black is a scarey colour for guns.
And shure why would yea want a pistol grip on that thing.

It would be funny except its so true and frustrating.
