I have a good amount of Marlins in 30-30,32spcl,357,44 mag,256 Win,35 rem,25-20,etc.Was keeping an eye out for a pre-crossbolt in either 444 or 45-70.Went to a gun show in our area and there was an 1895 in 45-70 with no crossbolt.A little haggling and $625 it came home.Thought Ill never find one.Ser # is "BO" looks like 72-73'.I reload so I got Starline brass coming.Gotta decide on bullet weight.Have a rail and will get rings and either a 1x4 or 1.5x5 Leupold.
FYI there was a 44mag there also for $600.

I love mine and it's a BO from 1972--a first year, too. I have hunted with it since buying it used in the mid 70s and it has never let me down. Most are one shots with a 405 gr bullet or a 350. I hunt the mountains and woodlands of Virginia where some shots are close and brushy. I have two 336s--a .35 with amazing wood, a 30-30, and a 25M in .22 mag. I love them all. I'd buy another '95 at the price you paid. Nice catch.

Look, you stole that beautiful gun. There I said it.

"BO" is what they put at the beginning of the serial numbers in 1972 when they re-introduced the 1895, and depending on how early in ’72 it was made, it either has 8 grove micro-grove rifling or 12 grove micro-grove rifling. I believe the change is around the BO 007XXX range from what I’ve seen on posted serial numbers.


And don’t chop it. You have a first year re-introduction 1895. These will appreciate in price.


Is it 3, 4, 5 digit serial numbered rifle?

After the BO 5 digets.Looks like 8 groove.No chopping just adding a 1x4 or 1.5x5 Leupold.
Any thoughts on what bullet will preform well with an 8 groove?

Thanks 410er for the buttplate pic. I recently picked up one of these locally in excellent shape but it's missing the buttplate. Gunshop got an estate collection in and half the guns had slip on recoil pads. For some reason the previous owner removed the buttplates on all of them and they were unable to find them. Mine is a 4 digit serial number with 8 groove rifling.
