I live 22 miles from one range and 35 miles from another. So I don't get there very often, as well.

Where in the world do you live. It'll be the middle of May before I see green like that!
I live on the Left coast of Florida. Not the West coast, the Left coast. Palm Beach County. Our county is so screwed up about guns that there isn't a single 100-yard range in the whole county. The nearest ranges that go to 100+ yards are just over an hour south, and just under an hour and a half north.

Actually, the county did build a rifle range not too long ago. They had a whole referendum, garnered public support, sold bonds to fund the construction, and then when it was built, restricted it for Sheriff's Office use only, except on certain weekends, when you can shoot at whatever range they predetermine that they want it to be that day. One Sunday they may have you shooting at 100 yards, the next at 500. It makes absolutely no sense at all. However, I must say that our weather does kick ass.

You are lucky... I live on 5 acres but that isn't enough room to keep the neighbors happy when I break out the big bores so I travel. Wish I could just walk outside and shoot. Times would be great!
Grrrrrrr............'bout the same here. Seventeen acres, 150yd range is had easy, with an earth berm I could make it 300yds. But then there is the whining neighbor 100yds down the road.
She claims that when I shoot, her house dogs go into a barking frenzy. About the time she gets them to shut-up, BLAM! And it starts all over. So I go to a range 20mi away, which ain't
always easy, instead of just going out the back door. Luv it when they are on vacation!

Now that you mention it, the county where I live in WV doesn't have a range. The 2 I go to are in 2 different counties...one to the south and one to the east.

You know if I had enough land to shoot on, I say heck with the neighbors!

That's the range that was supposed to be a public range, but then after they built it they decided it should be a Sheriff's Office range instead.

The Sherriffs range has been there for about 15yrs. I don't think it was ever suposed to be A public range.
True they never got around to building the public range and probably never will.
Still it is not A bad place to shoot. Depending where you live it may be A lot closer. Lots of good folks shoot there. Why not give it A try?

I second jbs04. I do have neighbors about 150 yds away on 3 sides of my house. My dad is one , my brother is one and the other family is probably one of the best neighbors that a family could have. He owns about 125 acres and I lease his property to hunt on for a whole penny a year. On my range I can shoot up to 150 yds. If I get on the four wheeler and ride back to some land I have leased to hunt(not the neighbors) on I can shoot up to 500 yds. I consider myself very lucky. I'm in my 40's and I've been shooting since I was about 13 and not one single time has anyone around here ever complained about it.

The story I read said that it was originally supposed to be a public range. I'm sure it's nice, but the shortest distance you can shoot at is 50, right? I'd look funny as heck trying to do quick Mozambique drills with my Ruger LCP at 50 yards. (LOL)

Seriously, though... when I shoot, I like to shoot a variety of guns, handguns included. I like to practice quick double-taps at self-defense range as well as slow-fire at a hundred yards. I can drive 45 minutes to get to the Sheriff's Office range, or twice that to get to a range where I can shoot what I like. It's worth it to me to drive the extra distance. The only downside is that since I don't shoot that often, I've never gotten into reloading the way I've always wanted to.

You are correct. No handguns and the shortest distance is 50 yards.
Their benches suck too.
The shooting in Palm Beach Co. is very limited the indoor ranges won't allow reloads so I don't go to them.
I have not been to the range in Martin Co. since they mooved it to Okeechobee.

Sever years ago they did aprove A public range. Even had the land donated for it. The cost of gov. red tape pretty much killed it. For instance they came up with A number over A MILLON bucks for A study and plans to build the range. The NRA would have provided this for free. They had to do their own study and plan. But that cost too much. So we get nothing! :'(
