I am trying to find a hyphenated but I don't know which one. I need one that can take everything from tin cans, to rabbits,to deer with minor pelt damage on the animals (no huge holes like a 45-70). If I do any hunting, it won't be over 200 yards(most of my shots are within 50 to 100 yards). I hand load, so factory ammo isn't a major issue.

While you are hunting for a hyphenated you will see a lot of orange! Especially during the 38-55 season.

This might help- I calculated that I'm getting 1555 loads out of a pound of Unique for my 32-20.....
Over on the castboolits forum they have a poll out... If you could only have one powder, what would it be...guess which one the majority likes!

Poll: One powder only

Well, the SMALLER calibers are OKAY....I GUESS, but I'm with Mark 38-55 all the way! Bigger than a 30-30, smaller than a 45-70....what's not to love! Plus, I don't have any of the other smaller calibers....yet. In fact, going to shoot my 38-55 this weekend for the first time! So YES 38-55!

Trapper,

Now I'm sure Mark shouted loud enough because I heard him in NJ!

What you need is something a bit more visual. This happens to be an example of a .38-55 in a Marlin 1893 flavor.

Absolutely stay away from the .38-55 cartridge. :flute: Don't listen to all these guys and all their claims. They are just a bunch of enablers. Besides, every person they talk into buying a .38-55 makes it just that much more difficult for me to find one!

The 30 30 would have a wide range of bullet weights(100-170) and the cheapest ammo, but the 25 35, 32 40 and 38 40 would work fine.(AS WELL AS THE 38 55).

Ha! I guessed right before I peeked. For cast bullets Unique is the king of the hill for many calibers. Fun post, thanks.

Trapper:

My requirements are much like yours; most commonly I use a 30-30 as a walk around gun. Since I started casting boolits, it's become even more useful. I have a 45-70 that I load up and down too, but yes, the 30-30 makes a smaller hole. Like Chris, I'm looking for a 38-55, and if I find one, all bets are off.

P.S. Most are marlins !!!!!!

I sure hope someone doesn't throw a 93 in here amongst us. What a dust up that would turn into. Meanwhile I've got my 2 375's and my new 1885 high wall 38-55 to keep me entertained while I keep my eye peeled for a straggler. Me and the boys are gonna tie up the 100 yard line tomorrow. The sun is gonna be out and so are the toys!

Unique the most used powder? That sincerely surprises me. When I tried it, all my 1895 did was spit the bullets out every which way! I put the bottle back up on the shelf and haven't tried it again!
