I'm thinking of posting a thread that details a way to check a rifle for barrel droop to within .005". Do you guys think it is needed?

If you want to see what the actual amount of droop is to within .005". Or to check any other rifles barrel to receiver straightness, including tapered barrels, keep reading.

If you want to see the quick and easy way to check a 308MX or 338MX, for when your at a gunshow or LGS and have to decide right then, go to post 48... :)

Or here...

Been a gunsmith for crowding 35 years, done quite a bit of rifle work, chambering, complete guns, etc. I have never heard the term "barrel droop". Not even to the 1/4 inch, much less 5 thou.

Would someone fill me in?:hmmmm:

If it doesn't cost anything, doesn't smell bad, isn't super butt ugly and doesn't cause a meltdown of the economy ... then it couldn't hurt.

Why start another thread though? Just do it right here, right now.

I'm always interested in reading ways people have devised to check for barrel droop ... I've seen many - including using straight edges, laser levels, bore sighting lasers, just plain-old shooting the things and then, there were the garden hoses. So fire away - share with us the details friend. :)

... RGR. I never heard the term "Barrel Droop" until I picked up a 308MX and then started researching it. I got it for a good price but had to buy it right away or loose it. It seems some of the receivers were drilled and tapped a little off and when the barrels are screwed in they point down. Firing ok with the iron sights because they are on the barrel but when you mount a scope on the receiver the elevation can't be adjusted low enough to sight it in. Have to shim the rear of the scope mount to sight it in.

Also causing off center firing pin strikes and primer backing out of pocket (I'm guessing because the bolt isn't flat up against cartridge).

Use these steps to determine the alignment of the receiver & bolt assembly to the barrel.

Remove the rear sight elevator, the front site hood, the forearm and the magazine. Lower the rear sight folding leaf.

Wood

Install a scope mount. I used a weaver 63B with the long end over the barrel. No shims. This is mainly to get the straight edge above the sights.

P.S. I took this picture before removing the bolt.

Use this formula..

A+(B/2-C/2)=D

D will be the expected measurement from the top of the scope mount to the top of the barrel muzzle.

Mine is .535"

I found my barrel droop the hard way, trying to get a Leupold scope on paper with my SBL. When I called Leupold they walked me through the entire fix with two .006" shims. Now my gun shoots great but this is a real issue with Remlins. I have two Remlins with barrel droop.

When I get a chance I am going to test it with the formula above as well. Thanks for the info, nice job.
