I have 2 XL7's both in 270. One of mine broke even before shooting the rifle for the first time. I replaced it and havent have anymore problems. Like I've said before, some gunsmith or machinist could make a small fortune if they made an forged extractor.

Ok, I know its been a while since I was here, been pretty busy. Anyway, I contacted Marlin over my broken extractor and they sent me a set (claw springs and all). 3 weeks went by and it never showed up so I called back and they sent me another set. 3 days later the second set arrived, the next day the first set arrived, lol. They told me to keep the extra set. As a bonus they added free of charge a rear sight elevator for my 336, sent me one of each style just in case. I was worried about their customer service but I had a good experience.

By the way the first extractor set was postmarked for the same day I had initially called them!

Buy the Savage one, and stone or file it to size, its not that difficult . . .
Ok, I know it's been a while since I posted this, but... I had my new claw break that they sent me. Can you tell me which model for Savag I should order to file and install in my Marlin?

BTW, The problem I was having was involving using Russian steel case ammo. The ammo was sticking in the bore and therefore putting excessive load on the extractor when trying to remove the spent casing. I don't know why, but I did give away a three boxes of the Russian stuff to avoid future issues.

If it was lacquer coated then this was most likely what was causing the cases to stick. I had a 2008 xl in 270 and never had a problem.

So don't shoot steel cases ammo in your hunting gun. It is nasty stuff and should only be used in "fun Guns". ;)

The only extractor issue I've had was with a gun that was rechambered. The 'smith didn't do a good job on the chamber and it caused the case to stick in the chamber as well. My other "X" guns have had no issues with the extractors after firing thousands of rounds thru them. ;D

Lost the extractor after 4 rounds when new. The number for the Savage extractor is Brownells #855-000-018. There is thread here on fitting it.

Never use Russian steel on a rifle made for brass, want something cheap try mil-surp NATO. I use steel only in my Saigas they have a bolt head and extractor made for the stuff.
